Paste image from clipboard changes image compression with v.9  SOLVED

Post by David.P »

Hello Forum and Tracker Team,

In the past it was possible to paste images from the clipboard in their original format, or with the original compression method, respectively.

For example, full color images from the clipboard were usually pasted with Flate compression, i.e. lossless.

Recently, it seems that such images are converted to JPEG by default when pasted, resulting in compression artifacts and loss of image quality.

Is there any way to revert to the previous behavior, i.e. to be able to paste images from the clipboard lossless again?

Best regards
David

Hi, David.P

My apologies for the delay getting back to you here. Could I ask you to please send us a copy of a document, and a lossless formatted image you noticed the difference in after pasting? I am not seeing any differences between pasting in my V7, V8 and V9 instances here, and would love to have an example to work with and confirm a change in behaviour.

Kind regards,

Hi Daniel,

thank you for your response.

For some reason I can't reproduce the behavior so far today. Full color images are inserted again with lossless compression from the clipboard.

I will keep an eye on this and report back if the problem reoccurs.

Best regards
David

Hello Stefan,

for some reason, the issue has just reappeared.

However, I noticed that there is a setting for this option. This was set to "Auto" compression for color images, which probably is why it decided to use (lossy) JPG for certain images:

After I changed the option to "Flate" compression, all images now seem to be inserted lossless (not in the current document, but in newly opened or re-opened documents).

So from my side the issue can be considered resolved!

Kind regards
David

I had the same problem: if I open an image file in PDF-XChange Editor, it is displayed in its original form, without compression artifacts. If I drag the same file to the PDF-XChange Editor window, it is also pasted without artifacts. But if I copy it, for example, to FastStone Image Viewer 7.9, and paste it into PDF-XChange Editor with the sidebar active, the same image is pasted with artifacts. The same thing happens when pasting from Adobe Photoshop 26.7.0. From this I conclude that the problem is most likely in the insertion method, and not in the original application. At the same time, in the "Image Compression" tab of the "Images Insertion Options…" window, all four "Compression Enabled" checkboxes are disabled, that is, any compression is disabled.

Expected behavior: All three methods produce the same result and are controlled clearly and unambiguously in one place in the application settings.

Hello, Jensen Head

Beyond the control methods that are mentioned earlier in this thread, the insertion method is highly deponent on the available format of the content that was supplied to the clipboard. Some applications will provide a multiple different formats of copied content to the clipboard at once, and we get the "pick of the litter" for which one we want to use. In those cases, if a properly formatted image is available for us to use without recompressing we try to do so for actions where this is possible. However in most cases, only one format is provided, and we have to work with what is present.

Sometimes that will be the image file itself (which cannot be pasted onto a page, but can be pasted into the attachments pane), others it may be a jpg, png, or otherwise formatted "dataset" (I forget the technical term, so please don't quote me on this "name"), other times still it could be a special substructure object, and sometimes it is an unformatted image "dataset".
While some of those formats do allow for direct use without recompression, in many of these cases, recompression is required to insert the image into the PDF, and those are the cases when it will happen.
