Right-clicking at negative X/Y screen coordinates causes context menu to appear incorrectly

Post by rakunavi »

Hello all,

When using multiple displays, I noticed that if you open a PDF-XChange Editor window on the display positioned at the top left of the main display, the context menu that appears when you press the right mouse button displays in a location unrelated to the mouse cursor's position. More precisely, if you press the right mouse button to open the context menu at a location where both the X and Y coordinates are negative in the screen coordinate, the context menu appears in a different location than intended.

The following figure shows the screen coordinate with red axes, illustrating the relationship with the display placement for each case. The pink highlighted area represents the region where both the X and Y coordinates are negative. In cases like Case 1 or Case 2, where the entire display falls within this region, the issue occurs anywhere on the window as long as the context menu is displayed there. In cases like Case 3 and Case 4, where only part of the display falls within this region, the issue only occurs when the mouse cursor is within that specific area.

  • figure.png
In the first verification video below, you open the context menu by right-clicking at various locations in the document under settings matching Case 1. No matter where you right-click in the document, the context menu always appears in the same position at the top-left corner.

  • Animation1.gif
The capture software used (ScreenToGif) displays a yellow circle around the mouse cursor when the left mouse button is clicked
and a red circle when the right mouse button is clicked, so you can tell which mouse button was clicked just by looking at the screen.
For comparison, the following video shows the same operation performed on a window positioned on the display where the issue does not occur—specifically, on an area where either the X or Y coordinate is positive.

  • Animation2.gif
It would be appreciated if you could verify this on a computer configured for multiple displays.

Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you so much for your continued support.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Hello Sean, thank you for contacting developers.

I have confirmed that the same issue occurs with PDF-Tools and PDF-XChange Printer Standard. It is assumed the cause is the same as in PDF-XChange Editor.

That said, the occurrence is limited to only a very small part of the application's overall UI. Since both applications have very few scenarios where the context menu is displayed at the location indicated by the mouse cursor, unlike PDF-XChange Editor, the impact on usability is extremely minimal.

In the following verification videos, the right-click button is pressed in the same scenario for each application, both in cases where the issue occurs and where it does not. Particularly interesting is that in the first half of the PDF-Tools video, even though it is just right-clicking repeatedly on the same location within the category, in the cases where the issue occurs, the target displayed as the context menu somehow changes one after another.

PDF-Tools

  • Animation3.gif
The capture software used (ScreenToGif) displays a yellow circle around the mouse cursor when the left mouse button is clicked
and a red circle when the right mouse button is clicked, so you can tell which mouse button was clicked just by looking at the screen.

PDF-XChange Printer Standard

    Animation2.gif
While the impact might be small at present, in GUI-based applications where mouse operation is essential, incorrect interpretation of screen coordinates could potentially cause various unpredictable problems.

Please give my best regards to the developer.

Best regards

Hello Sean, thank you for contacting developers.

While this isn't new information, I'll share another verification example to illustrate the severity of the behavior caused by this issue in PDF-XChange Editor.

The verification steps are as follows:

  1. Open the Bookmarks pane and left-click to select the bookmark entry “Page 1”.
  2. Right-click the bookmark entry “Page 20” to open the Context menu and select Delete.
  • sample.pdf

When either the X or Y screen coordinate is positive

  • The first video shows the operation result on a display where both X and Y coordinates are positive. Please confirm that the bookmark entry "Page 20” is deleted as intended.

    video1.webm

When both the X and Y screen coordinate is negative

  • The second video shows the operation result on a display where both X and Y coordinates are negative. Please confirm that, contrary to intent, the bookmark entry “Page 1” is deleted. Even when right-clicking on “Page 20” as shown in the video, as mentioned in my previous post, PDF-XChange Editor internally seems to interpret it as a right-click on “Page 1”—a completely different location.

    video2.webm

Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you so much for your continued support.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Hello all, thank you for contacting developers.

While this isn't new information, I'll share another verification example to illustrate the severity of the behavior caused by this issue in PDF-XChange Editor.

The verification steps are as follows:

  1. Draw a rectangular comment and copy it from the context menu.
  2. Open the context menu at a desired location (*) and paste it.
  3. Copy the text from Notepad.
  4. Open the context menu at a desired location (*) on a page in PDF-XChange Editor and paste it.
Since this is exactly the same as the previous test environment, the video below omits the coordinate display from AutoHotkey’s Windows Spy tool.

When either the X or Y screen coordinate is positive

  • The first video shows the operation result on a display where both X and Y coordinates are positive. Both the rectangular comment and the text are pasted at the exact location (*) where you right-clicked to open the context menu.

    Animation1.gif

When both the X and Y screen coordinate is negative

  • The second video shows the operation result on a display where both X and Y coordinates are negative. Rectangular comments are pasted in the exact same location as the original copied object. Text is pasted in the center of the page.

In other words, both are pasted in positions that are completely unrelated to the location (*) where you right-clicked to open the context menu. To put it another way, the result is the same as if you had selected the “Paste” command from the menu or pressed the Ctrl+V shortcut key.

    Animation2.gif
Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you for your hard work on this great software.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Hello all,

The latest build includes improvements related to this issue. Indeed, the position of the context menu that appears when right‑clicking on the document background has been improved. I would like to express my appreciation to the developers and everyone involved for your efforts.

After investigating the details further, I noticed that in situations where a text cursor appears—specifically in the following areas—the context menu is still positioned based on the location of the text cursor:

  • Quick Launch and the Search pane
  • Editing a text comment
  • Entering text in a text form field
  • Entering text in the text input field of the Comments pane
When some text has already been entered and the user right‑clicks on the area where that text exists, the following two positions generally coincide, so basing the context menu on the text cursor position is not a problem:

  1. The mouse cursor position
  2. The position where the text cursor appears
However, as shown in the video below, when no text has been entered in the field, positions (1) and (2) differ. Even in such cases, the context menu is always displayed based on (2), the text cursor position, which can feel unnatural to users. In typical Windows applications, the context menu is displayed based on (1), the mouse cursor position, in these situations.

  • Animation1.gif
The capture software used (ScreenToGif) displays a yellow circle around the mouse cursor when the left mouse button is clicked
and a red circle when the right mouse button is clicked, so you can tell which mouse button was clicked just by looking at the screen.
Additionally, even within PDF‑XChange Editor, if the operation is performed on a display where either the X or Y coordinate is positive, the context menu is displayed based on (1), the mouse cursor position, just like in most applications.

  • Animation2.gif
This is a very minor detail, but I noticed it and thought it might be useful to share.

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule.
Please give my best regards to developers.

Best regards,
rakunavi
