With both OCR plugins in version 8, it seems that rotated text can be detected, corrected and recognized. I tested with text rotated 90 degrees in either direction with both plugins. The rotation was corrected and the text recognized with the Enhanced OCR plugin, but not with the regular plugin. With the regular plugin the rotation was fixed, but the text was not recognized. With text rotated 180 degrees the rotation was corrected and the text was recognized also with both plugins. Is this just with the document I tested?

Thank you for the report, I was able to reproduce this as well and have created a bug report on the matter:
RT#4733: Default OCR engine does not handle 90° rotation properly.
