drag and drop image from file explorer

Post by MedBooster »

Is it possible for images that you drag and drop from file explorer into a PDF to be pasted as a comment/stamp into the PDF, instead of simply being added to the "attachment" pane?

And when something is added to this pane, is it then embedded, or is it just a "link"/shortcut to an external file/document/image?

Via drag-and-drop from Windows File Explorer to an open PDF in PDF-XChange Editor, you can copy a picture to:
- the Attachments-pane, like an embedded file, incorporated in the PDF (= NOT-linked), or
- the Thumbnails-pane, like an image on a new page

Drag-and-drop a picture onto a page like a new stamp seems not to be possible at this moment and could be "a feature request".

To copy a picture onto a page at this moment, I see the following possibilities:
- use the Add... > Add Image... function in the Home-ribbon
- take a snapshot of the picture and then right-mouse-click in PDF-XChange Editor, followed by "Paste as Image"

Kind regards.

If you drag an image into the Bookmarks pane or into the Thumbnails pane, it will be inserted into the PDF as an additional page at the corresponding position.

Inserting a bitmap as a comment is currently only possible if the image is pasted from the clipboard into a page.

I agree that it would be useful to have bitmaps inserted as comments on the page when dragging them from Windows Explorer and dropping them over a page.

Hi,

+1 for that feature

Let's see what our developers think about this.

#6455: FR: Adding the ability to drag and drop images from file explorer directly into the document

btw. what happens if you drag and drop another PDF document from file explorer into PDF-xce? Should you then maybe be asked if you want to merge the documents (insert some of the pages perhaps), or just add it onto the attachment panel? Or maybe an attachment link, or whatever you call that sticky note-like "shortcut"

Hello, MedBooster

Where you drag the other PDF file is important, if you drag it into the main frame it will open the file, if you drag into the thumbnails pane, it will insert the document into the current one at the dropped pagemark, if you drag the file into the attachments pane, it will attach that pdf to the currently viewed file.

I am still confused about this 1+ year later...
I mean is it possible to change the default behavior to not add stuff into the attachment panel? I'd rather have the attachment panel work only if I drag it directly into it or open it and import it using some specific "add attachment" button....

It just adds many unnecessary steps to have to open the file in some image reader, right click , copy and only then paste, rather than being able to drag multiple images in, and have them be in the document as images "stamps", instead of "attachments" :/

Hello, MedBooster

I am not sure what there is to be confused about, the request exists and it is taking time to be implemented. In the meantime, the behaviors have not changed. I am sorry this is taking longer than desired, but generally "interim fixes" (like your suggestion to change the handling to nothing in specific cases until a change is ready) are something we try to avoid wherever not strictly necessary.

I will try to increase the priority of this item for you, but that is the most I can do at this junction.

E.g. when dragging and dropping multiple files into PDF-XCE: (see the selected PNGs in the screenshot)
1) together – each PNG becomes a separate new PDF
2) one by one, added to the attachment panel

I find this behavior confusing, thus I prefer to somehow choose what happens (I'm not using the attachment panel, but choosing between making a new (single?) PDF or pasting the PNGs into an existing PDF. In new pages , one for each is fine... then you can just move them if needed

3) logically speaking... if you drag them all together, shouldn't they at least become a single new PDF, instead of 10 new ones?

I don't see an "import image" command under customize toolbars...

Re: drag and drop image from file explorer

Hello, MedBooster

Moving forward, and in the current "nightly internal pre-release" I am testing today, image drag/drop will be handled the same as all other formats. ([Edit]: On investigating it seems this is actually in the current (392) release as well, though I missed it! I am not sure when the "add to attachments" handling ended, but it should not happen any longer, unless you manually open the attachments pane and drop the images into it)
  • If you drag the file directly into the Thumbnails pane, it will insert them at that location into the currently opened document, with each image as a single page (note that Gif's and other animation formats, will convert each FRAME of the animation, into a single page).
  • If you Drag them into the attachments pane, they will be attached as separate files to the currently opened document.
  • If you drag them into the central document area, much like all others file types, each file will be opened as its own separate entity.
Should you need to combine multiple images into a single PDF, you should use the "File > new document > combine files" function, which is the same function you would use to convert multiple PDF files, or multiple Word documents into a single output file.

Do note that this does not grant Drag/drop of images any special "insert onto current page" handling at this time. For that, you will need to continue using copy/paste, or from the home tab, click "Add > images". This last note ties in partially to your PS - there is no "import images" tool/action, the tool you are looking for is simply called "Add image...".

Just to I am always appalled by how difficult it is to insert image files (e.g. JPGs) into PDF-Xchange. It's such great software, and I use it every day, but the process of inserting image files is so frustrating :( . Hopefully, this will change soon.

Just to bring the topic up again...

I wouldn't say I'm appalled by the current options, as there are already a couple of ways to insert images, either as base content or as stamps, which only take a few seconds.

However, I agree it would be even better, and awesome, if we could simply drag and drop an image from Windows Explorer onto a PDF page and have it inserted, with an option to choose between base content and stamp, or directly as the preferred default setting.

Ideally, the image's original DPI would be preserved during insertion. If the DPI is unavailable or results in an unsuitable size, a standard size could be used, and the image easily resized by hand.

I cannot promise any further changes in this area at the moment, but I will raise this once again with the Dev team for consideration.

I’m sitting at the computer yet again, trying to import JPEG images into a PDF file, and I’m shocked at how complicated this process is in PDF-XChange. Why isn’t there a simple drag-and-drop option? I just don’t understand what’s so difficult about that... :?

Hello, CB-Crew2

Not everything that is delayed is due to difficulty. Various factors impact the development process and priorities. I am sorry that this is not coming along as quickly as some would like, but I cannot do anything more to expedite it at this point.
