Error by Editing PDF in Webbrowser-Control
Hello,
I've been having the following problem since the last update of the PDF-XChange Editor.
I created a viewer program with VB.NET that allows me to view and edit PDF files using PDF-XChange in a web browser control. I've been doing this kind of display method under VB6 for at least 15 years, and it always worked perfectly.
Unfortunately, since the last update, I've had the problem that while I can view the PDF files in the browser with the XChange Viewer, when I edit the PDF file, an error occurs after the first change.
Here's a demonstration:
It seems that the viewer is somehow accessing the PDF instance twice. This is evident because after I cancel the access error while saving and try to view a new file, the XChange Viewer asks again to save the changes. But even if I confirm this prompt with "Yes," I get the same error. Only after completely closing and restarting my program can I edit the first file again, but I get the same error messages for all subsequent files.
I've also tried resetting all file associations, but that didn't help either.
This way of viewing and editing PDF files is very important to me, as I need it for my daily work.
Incidentally, the same problem occurs with another file viewer.
I hope you can help me, or at least reproduce and fix the error.
Regards, Nimrod

Hi Nimrod,
I'm afraid there is not much we can do to offer support in custom setups. I'd suggest that you try rolling back to a previous version where this issue was not present for the time being.
Kind regards,

Re: Error by Editing PDF in Webbrowser-Control
Hi Sean,
Were you able to reproduce the error?
To clarify:
I have a WebBrowser control and I'm displaying the PDF file as follows:
The first file is saved correctly. This error only occurs with subsequent files; saving is no longer possible.

thank you for the information.Sean - PDF-XChange wrote: ↑Mon Nov 10, 2025 4:12 pm Hi Nimrod,

Hi Nimrod,
Unfortunately, we’re unable to provide support for setups that involve third-party environments or custom integrations (such as those using WebBrowser1.Navigate). This goes beyond the scope of what we produce and maintain.
We recommend consulting the documentation or community resources for the specific tools or frameworks you’re using.

Re: Error by Editing PDF in Webbrowser-Control
I'm sorry, but I don't understand your answer.
Firstly, it's not about a setup, but about the interaction between XChange Viewer and the web browser. Secondly, some change must have occurred in the last XChange Viewer update that's causing this issue.
As I said, it seems that a duplicate reference to the displayed PDF file is created on the second attempt. And that's what's causing this error.

Hi Nimrod,
What I mean is that our support is generally based around using our products as standalonge products, and not in conjunction with browsers or custom integrations such as those using WebBrowser1.Navigate. Such setups involve additional elements that we do not produce or maintain, and therefore it is usually beyond the scope of the support that we offer. That said, I have asked one of the developers for their input on this, and I will get back to you in due course.

Hello Sean,
Thank you so much for the information. That's exactly what I was hoping for. I just wish a developer would take a look at it and maybe find the bug or problem and fix it in one of the next updates (hopefully).

Hi Nimrod,
An update for you - the development team are aware of some issues with loading PDF-XChange Editor in browsers. They are working on those issues at the moment, so I'd advise that you keep an eye out for future updates that may include a fix for you.

Hi Nimrod,
Sure thing, sounds good. And it's PDF-XChange Editor that you're using! PDF-XChange Viewer is one of our older and now discontinued products.
Thanks and have a nice day,
