mouse wheel scroll on zoom slider

Post by xchangefan »

Hi team,

There used to be a nice little feature in old pdf xchange viewer, that I still miss in editor:
Scrolling with mouse wheel on the zoom slider (Page Zoom toolbar in bottom right). The slider would actually move with mouse wheel scroll. This saved a few clicks on + and - icons.

Kindly consider adding it.
Thanks

Hello, xchangefan

This feature was moved to the zoom% text box. Simply scroll with your mouse overtop of that, and you should get the desired effect:

Hello Daniel,

I'm afraid that using the wheel on the zoom% text box will not produce the result the original poster expects.

Fundamentally, when changing the zoom ratio using the wheel on the zoom% text box, the setting value depends on the dropdown list items, resulting in very coarse increments or decrements in the zoom ratio. In contrast, using the wheel on the zoom slider in PDF-XChange Viewer allows for much finer step changes, as described later, so it does not seem to be a viable alternative.

Additionally, in the video, Daniel adjusts the zoom ratio on the zoom% text box within the range above 50%. Have you ever tried adjusting it below 50%? As shown in the figure below, in PDF-XChange Editor, scrolling the wheel downward causes the zoom level to change infinitely without stopping. On the other hand, PDF-XChange Viewer only cycles through the dropdown list items sequentially. Therefore, once you reach the last list item, no matter how much you scroll down with the wheel, the zoom ratio will not change.

The closest operation to wheel manipulation on the zoom slider in PDF-XChange Viewer would likely be using Ctrl+Wheel. However, even with Ctrl+Wheel, it cannot compete with the smoothness of the Viewer.

When using the wheel on the Viewer's slider, the zoom changes in a total of 35 steps, as shown below.

  1. 6400%
  2. 5011%
  3. 3924%
  4. 3072%

In contrast, when you change the zoom ratio using Ctrl+Wheel in Viewer or Editor, it changes in a total of 24 steps as follows.

  1. 6400%
  2. 3200%
  3. 2400%

Comparing the zoom ratio changes of both tools in a graph highlights the smoothness of the Viewer's zoom ratio.

By comparing the behavior of both in detail like this, I feel I can understand what the original poster meant by “a nice little feature.”

Hello, rakunavi

Indeed, there does seem to be an issue with scrolling down farther than I did in my example, I did not notice that while recording... And now that it is coming up, I am fairly certain that we have discussed something along these lines before (you image there looks very familiar). I will have to double check as we may already have a ticket for that.

RT#7693: Bug: Scroll above zoom text box - skips back up at low zoom

As for the number of steps, yes the Editor does indeed have fewer, I do not believe that is slated to change, but core of my response was that the scrolling functionality they were looking for is still present, it has simply moved. It does not matter whether you scroll the mouse wheel or click the +/- buttons, the number of steps the Editor offers is the same. I will check if we can possibly increase that, and perhaps allow scrolling over the zoom buttons/bar to also work, as it did in the viewer, but I cannot make any promises at this point.
