Reader Bookmarks [PDF-XChange Viewer]

Post by Fosco »

The bookmarks currently in the PDF-XChange Viewer are essentially the table of contents for the document. Would it be possible to add a user bookmark feature? This would be the electronic equivalent of the Post-It tape flags that one can mark pages with in printed matter.

These 'electronic flags' could then be merged into the existing bookmarks so one could see what pages are favorites or have significant importance to the reader. They could be colored for user significance and could also be listed separately of the current bookmarks.

I suppose they would need a name so how about 'User Tabs' or maybe 'Page Pointers' or how about 'Leaf Labels'? We're allowed some silliness aren't we?

User bookmarks -- yes, please!

I am most interested in this for easier navigation of a document that I am currently reading. I could mark any spot of interest that I think I may want to return to, then move around in the document, and then easily return to those spots. I don't care as much about saving those marks for the next time that I open that document (though that might be nice). The merging of my user marks with the permanent bookmarks in the left pane as Fosco describes would be nice but there may be simpler solutions that would suite me. For example, the View->GoTo menu could list all of my user bookmarks (identified by page number for example).

yes, add/edit user bookmarks (in the same bookmark pane that already exists) ... just like any decent pdf viewer/editor does.

The point is - the Free version of the PDF-XChange Viewer is **NOT** and Editor.

The ability to add/edit Bookmarks will be available in the PRO version available this spring and not in the FREE version.

Understood, the free version is a reader, not an editor. And adding/editing bookmarks will be in the PRO version. Ok. But I don't think that a general "edit bookmarks" feature for the free reader is what is being asked for in this thread. For me anyway, I am talking about easier reading/navigation, not about editing. That is, some way to mark my current page (or pages) while reading so that I can more easily get back to that page later. I don't care if those marked pages are not saved when I exit the document. So this feature would be about navigation, not about editing. Even if I could only mark a single page that would be great. Yes, I could use the Back button (left arrow) to return to a previously visited page, but in general that could require many many Back button pushes.

Using the slider at the riight of the display is a great way to get back to a page. I haven't trired it, but maybe a second opeing of the file would work giving a static display of a page to refer back to may work.

Don, for me using the slider is not at all a convenient way to get back to a prior page unless the document is very small. (For example, the reference manual I am looking at right now is 1386 pages and I need to jump around in it in random order.)

Yes, opening a second instance of the same file (separate tab) where I can save my prior page would help, though a bit awkward. I have tried this though and the reader doesn't seem to let me open two instances (tabs) of the same document. Actually, even better along these lines would be a split window feature. See my "split window" topic at:

gklein, I see your point. The only time I experience large pdf files is when refering to product manuals. My pdf files rarely exceed a dozen pages.

Take care,

You can use buttons Prev/Next view located at the bottom of pages view (near the area where current page number shown).

When attaching files to any message - please ensure they are archived and posted as a .ZIP, .RAR or .7z format - or they will not be posted - thanks.

Ivan, I suppose that you meant the Back button rather than the Prev button? (The Prev button only takes you to page N-1.) And per my above post in this topic, the Back button is not very convenient (too many Back button pushes in general to unwind all the way back to where I was).

why don't you use any of the "comments and markup" tools? I use them now instead of bookmarks, and they can even be saved.
Open the comments pane (CTRL+M), and it works exactly as if you were doing bookmarks in the bookmark pane ... no difference. In fact, it's even more powerful, cause you can differentiate "bookmark types" with different comment style.

Say, important bookmark will be a small rectangle, less important oval, adding a note as a bookmark is easy with typewritter tool ... endless possibilities ...

When you want to change what is exactly written in the comments pane, right click on the comment in the document, go to properties, general, and change the subject ... and you have a nice "bookmark name" ;-)

quant - Indeed! Great idea. That will do the job quite well. I'm a new user and I hadn't yet played with the Comments feature.
