If windows are displayed independently, 'Browse for Link Target' dialog may be hidden behind window when setting a link

Post by rakunavi »

=== UPDATE ===================================================================
The issue reported below has been resolved in Ver 10.3.0 build 386.
I appreciate all the hard work and efforts of the support and development team.
==============================================================================

Hello all,

The 'Browse for Link Target' dialog appears when setting up a link, but remains in the foreground until the target page has been selected and the button in the dialog is pressed or the named destination is double-clicked in the destination pane. However, I have found that if the windows are not tabbed but displayed independently, there is a problem when the dialog overlaps the window to which it is linked. Specifically, the 'Browse for Link Target' dialog hides behind the target window when the window becomes active after manipulating the linked window to specify the target page. In any case where you are setting up links between multiple documents to each other, you should run into this problem at some point.

As usual, I created a verification video with all settings initialized.

In the first half of the video, a link is set up from the first page of 'Sample A.pdf' opened in the window on the left side of the screen, to the second page of 'Sample B.pdf' opened in the window on the right side of the screen. The dialog is displayed at the position of the window from which the link originates, so it is not hidden during the operation.

<<<<<<
In the second half of the video, in reverse, a link is set up from the first page of 'Sample B.pdf' opened in the window on the right side of the screen, to second page of 'Sample A.pdf' opened in the window on the left side of the screen. Since the dialog is displayed at the position of the window to which it is linked, the dialog will be hidden behind the window when the window to which it is linked becomes active. The video pauses for 6 seconds at the exact point where the problem occurs, and the caption emphasizes that the 'Browse for Link Target' dialog is hidden behind. By clicking on the title bar of the window to which it is linked, the hidden dialog can be brought to the foreground.

Acrobat X

If you perform the same operation in Acrobat, the dialog will always be brought to the foreground and the user will not be confused. For reference, here is a video of the exact same operation performed in Acrobat as was done in the PDF-XChange Editor.

In the bottom figure, the page to be linked is displayed on the screen, and all that remains is to press the button in the dialog, exactly the same situation as in the PDF-XChange Editor shown immediately above. Note, however, that in Acrobat, the 'Create Go to View' dialog is displayed in the foreground.

The purpose of the 'Browse for Link Target' dialog in PDF-XChange Editor and the 'Create Go to View' dialog in Acrobat is almost the same, so there seems to be room for improvement.

Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you so much for your continued support.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Hello all,

I can confirm this, and it also happens with other dialogs, for example with the properties toolbar and even with whole panes such as for example the thumbnail pane (when it is undocked).

If multiple independent main windows are present, then, very often, floating toolbars or panes that belong to the window in the background are erroneously brought to the foreground (and vice versa).

It would be great if this issue could be fixed.

Cheers & best regards
David

Hello David.P, Rakunavi,

Thanks for the detailed description from Rakunavi, and for the confirmation from David P that this happens with other dialogues as well!
I've created a ticket for our devs:
#6649: Editor 381: Browse for link target (and other dialogues) are hidden is there are two independent windows with two files open.

So that this can be addressed!

Kind regards,
Stefan

Hello all,

As further background information on this issue: yesterday I had a presentation via MS Teams in which I had two groups of PDF documents open in two different PDF-XChange Editor windows.

Unfortunately, significant interruptions kept occurring in the presentation because, each time when opening the Properties toolbar, the wrong toolbar is displayed in the foreground, namely that of the PDF window which is currently in the background.

If you then click on the toolbar, for example to quickly change a color in the foreground PDF, then the background document jumps to the foreground instead. In a presentation, this is extremely irritating.

Therefore, it would be great if this problem could be fixed.

Best regards
David

While the above original issue as described by rakunavi might be solved (which I haven't checked but trust rakunavi for having done so), the remaining issue as described below is not resolved.

The problem is unchanged and can be very very irritating when working with different documents in different program windows (not tabs):

I'd be very happy if this could be looked into again and hopefully be fixed soon.
