How to install PDF-Xchange on Terminal server for per user session as opposed to system wide application?

Post by Noor998 »

Hi,
Well wishes!!

We want to test pdf-xchange before committing to it for long term.
Our main user base is on a terminal server 2019, about 50ish users there.

We want specific chosen ones to test the application rather than installing it system wide and commit to it from the get go.

Please suggest a resolution to this.... Thanks!!

Hi, Noor998

welcome to the PDF-XChange forums.

Unfortunately the Editor needs to be installed as a per machine application. Licensing however can be a mixed bag of licensed and unlicensed: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowledgeba ... nal-Server

If you want to limit access to the application to a specific group you will need to do that on the terminal server by preventing access to the executable.

I hope that helps.
Best regards

Well wishes!!

Just noticed this on the download options however it is not working -

A portable version will solve our problem. Can you confirm if the link will come live later or is it discontinued?

Hello, Noor998

Where are you seeing those links? That does not look like our official website, and the portable versions are more definitely still available and functional. It should be noted that ONLY the Editor is available in a portable version, PDF-Tools is not intended/designed for it, and virtual printers simply cannot run as portable applications.

You can download the latest release in a portable version from the Official Editor product page, here: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product/pdf-xchange-editor

[Edit] Also, I almost forgot to mention, the "Enhanced OCR" engine is not available in our portable versions, so if you needed that capability, you will need to fully install the software.

Hello, Noor998

Ah, the EU link would be the website of one of our largest European resellers. Thank you for clarifying.
Most of our resellers have been informed to always direct download traffic to our official site, but a few do offer redirect links. In some cases, security software may prevent the redirect from working as it leads to a zip file containing an executable.

Ok so when you do a google search - eu site is the top hit. You might wanna look into that.

Also one last question on this topic hopefully - If we buy a pdf-xhange Editor license, can we use it on the portable version? If so, then how does it behave?
I noted your point on the OCR earlier, Thanks!!

Hello, Noor998

Sadly google listings are somewhat beyond our control. Google makes assumptions and the like on a per-user basis, including location, search history, and previously visited sites. And they do not exactly allow anyone to come along and say "Our site is more important for this search term than theirs is" (other than the "sponsored sites" functions, which as a form of paid marketing, we do not have any intent to engage in).

We have had similar issues with Wikipedia, whereby they wont allow anyone who works for the company to update or create pages relating to our software. The "Editor" last I checked, does not exist, and in the Wikipedia list of all PDF software, only the Viewer is listed... (which would be where the blurb on the right of your screenshot comes from).

If any kind and active Wiki fluent individuals happens to see this in passing, we cannot offer any form of recompense as per Wikipedia's own regulations, but we would be grateful to see our software presented.

Regarding your final question about the portable version, the Enhanced OCR is essentially the only item missing from the Portable Editor, as I've mentioned Tools and the printers are not available in a portable version, but any license which includes the Editor (Editor, Plus, Tools and PRO licenses) can all be used to cover the portable version of the Editor in the same way.
