Paste Formats of Bookmarks

Post by Itsy »

Meny apps I use allows users to copy text and then paste only the format of the source to text targets. Sometims this a paste special option. Evn yur Editor has somthing like that in Comments so that i can "Copy Comment Style" (a Style Tool) and "Apply Copied Text Style." But I dont see a similer cappabilitie for Bookmark text other then the aukwerd "Make Current Properties Default" and then "Apply Default Properties." I am shur someon can tell me what I am missing.

Hi Itsy,

Can you please clarify what type of text you are trying to edit? Do you mean the name etc of bookmarks in the bookmarks pane?

Kind regards,

Thank you for asking for a clearification so quickly. See the attached file.
PDF Manual Pages 1305&06 Combined 11-3.pdf
If I want to change the color of the Bookmark Title text, I can do that in Properties.

Now, I want to copy that property to another Title.

How do I do that?

Hi Itsy - thanks for the clarification, I understand now. I'm afraid there is no automatic way to do what you want to do, and as it's quite a 'niche' request, I doubt it would get approval for a feature request - so for now your best option is simply to do this manually.

Tahnks but I am not asking it to be done 'automatically', I just want to be able to 'paste special' like I can in Word and Excel.

Forgive me if I find your position a bit odd given that the app provids this funtionalitie in the Typewriter tool

Hi Itsy - that feature is available in the typewriter tool, other commenting tools, and when editing text because those features depend on the ability to change text style etc according to what users want. It's very unusual for people to want to change the text style of bookmark titles, because they only serve a practical purpose (listing the bookmark title) and do not contribute to the presentation of the document in any meaningful way. I hope that clarifies the situation for you.

Kind regards,
It "clarifies the situation" to some extent. "The situation" being not oriented to users like me who have almost no interest in "the presentation of the document in any meaningful way." I try to avoid "documents", like the paper sort, at all costs. You might say that I DE-DOCUMENT stuff that I receive. I scan documents and I download files (I dont print those up as paper documents) so that I dont have "documents". I have digital files and I look at them on a screen. The last thing I want is more documents. In this century, people are learning to survive without paper documents, I am told. Some people like to view things on screens, tablets, and or phones. I am one.

I can conceed that Bookmarks are not very useful on paper documents. But they are a marvilus way of staying on top of digital content. Your App has some useful funtionalities for dealing with Bookmarks. For instance, the Change Bookmarks Case tool. Odd, you don't have that in the Typewriter tool. So, sumbody in your shop must have thought it not a bad idea to provide that tool to the irrelevent Bookmark users. And that seems to me to be a trickier thing to pull off than a toll that copies and pasts the a font color.

Finally, allow me to hint at why I raised the qestion in the first place. If I can color-code the fonts of Bookmarks that are all 'children' of one or another top-level Bookmarks, then I can instantly know wich branck I am in. Copy/Paste Special would help. But I get it: you don't want to help. J cannot argue with your pryorities. Please take cumfurt in the fact that the forem communitie is on your side judgin from the last of support my qestion got.

Hi all,

Would it help to include the needed/desired colors in Custom Colors?

You can select multiple bookmarks at once to give them a different color.

Kind regards.

Hi Itsy,

Sorry if you did not get the answer you wanted on this - but I hope you can appreciate that at any moment, we have many thousands of feature requests, and in general they are prioritised by demand. If a feature request has only been requested by a single user, as in this case, it is very unlikely to gain traction with the development team.

It's very important to us that our customers are satisfied, and we have taken your feedback on board and hope to assist you in resolving this in a satisfactory manner. Perhaps the advice that Willy has given will be of some use to you?

Thank you, Mr. Willy for yur suggestion. But it dos not exactly meet my wants. To esplain further. Say I alredy have a file with 20+ pages but 3 groups or parent Bookmarks. Each of the 3 have a diferent color. I add pages. I add Bookmarks but ther color is the default. Mebbe I add only 1 or 2 pages, each with a new Bookmark. I jest want to add the rite color to the new Bookmark. For 1 Bookmark, Copy/Paste special is all I need. I see the color of the 'rite' group and I paste it, no?

And Mr. Sean, it would be allrite if you just sed we will consider it along with thousands of other reqests without making me feel odd about my use of you App. After all, I dint really ask you to add any feture, I jest was trying to be educated about the product in case I missed someting. "I am shur someon can tell me what I am missing." to close the circle: No.

A "Copy color" / "Paste color"-function, specifically for Bookmarks, is indeed missing, but you can also use the already existing function "Make Current Properties Default" / "Apply Default Properties" for that, like you said in the beginning of this topic.

The advantage of this method is that also the "Bold" and the "Italic" attributes will be incorporated. A possible disadvantage is that the next new bookmark that you create will have the defaults from the last "Make Current Properties Default"-action that you made. However if you are still working in the same tree, this disadvantage could be turning into an advantage, no ?

Kind regards.

Thank you, Mr. Willy, but I am fully aware of the Apply Default Properties. I jest seemed to me tht if that were possilbe in Bookmarks and Copy and Paste Special in certin Comments, where is it in Bookmarks? It isnt there and wont be accoring to Mr. Sean. Life goes on.

Hi Itsy,

I think I do not clearly understand you.

The menu that I am showing here above is the one from a right-click on a bookmark, or a click on the Options...-icon, in the Bookmarks-pane.

This menu incorporates both options "Make Current Properties Default" and "Apply Default Properties", that can be used instead of a copy / paste color function. It does exactly the same as what you desire.

Sorry, do you still mean something else ?

Yes, I do. If I have 3, 4, 5, or more Bookmark groups that I want to color-code, ther will be no pariculer "Default" color. The different colors are all equal commoners with none given priority. I dnt want to reset the Defualt everytime I color a Bookmark.

Why should you have to "reset" the default each time ?

As long as you do not need the default color "Black", there is no need to reset.

Perhaps I should have explained the method step by step earlier :

1) in the Bookmarks-pane, right-click on the bookmark with the desired style
2) in the menu, click "Make Current Properties Default"
3) in the Bookmarks-pane, right-click on the bookmark that you like to change
4) in the menu, click "Apply Default Properties"

Does that help ?

Thanks, Mr. Willy, but no it does not help if I dont want to change the default. I just want to change the Bookmark and leave the Default settings alone. yur suggestion is cumberson. You leave out two steps: restore default settings to say black. Lets all mov on. I got my answer whch is "NO."

Hi Itsy,

At this moment, there is indeed NO "Format Painter" for Bookmarks available in PDF-XChange Editor.

I understand that you are not satisfied with the proposed work-around.

Maybe there is still a chance that the similar function from the TypeWriter will become available for Bookmarks.

Let us wait for a final answer from PDF-XChange Support.

Kind regards.

Hello, all

While there is indeed no "format painter" available for the Bookmarks pane, and as Sean has mentioned, we do not currently intend to offer one due to the numerous ongoing projects of higher priority and minimal user demand for a feature like this, I do have somewhat of a "possible" solution that could help to reduce the pain of this problem for you.

You are able to select a whole group of bookmarks, via "Shift_Click" - To edit their appearance properties all at once:
explorer_XP1tJ22RCD.gif
This may help to reduce the number of times you need to manually change a single bookmark, since you can instead select them in a batch to make one bulk change.

tHank you, Mr. Daniel, for offering more help.

But, yes, I know how to change color of a batch of Bookmarks.

I tink the best thing for me (I never askd for a new tool or feature) is to create a custom color in the palette, even if it is not really new, that is exactly the color of a group. Tehn, wehne I add a new Bookmard, I just click on the color property the obviously appropriat color from the palette for that group.

Pity i cant do Bold, too, but its a start.

Willy's suggestion here above really unlocked the puzzle even if not immediately appreciated. Users can pull up the Properties of a particular Bookmark and add that as a custom color if not already there. Then when needed, that color can be applied to the target Bookmark(s) ad infinitum. Arguably, this is even easier than copying and pasting special if that were available.
All best,
