RFE: map Ctrl+Home to Home, and map Ctrl+End to End

Post by DIV »

Hi, Tracker folk.

I think I have touched on this in the past, but I feel it's worth raising again.

Would you please be able to consider implementing a tiny tweak to the hotkeys so that when navigating a document,
  • Ctrl+Home will have the same effect as Home (and Shift+Home), and
  • Ctrl+End will have the same effect as End (and Shift+End).
There are a number of common (*understatement*) applications, such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, where Ctrl+Home is required to get to the very start of a document (Home just goes to the start of the current line/row), and Ctrl+End is required to get to the very end of a document (End just goes to the end of the current line/row).
I guess I'm not the only one who's developed the instinctive pressing of Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End in an attempt to navigate within Editor, but they don't seem to do anything. While that's mostly annoying (albeit not insurmountable), the silver lining is that if those hotkey combinations are currently unassigned, then it won't detract from anything else to make the proposed tweak.

Note: I don't think it's so important to do the same for Ctrl+Shift+Home and Ctrl+Shift+End, although it probably wouldn't be harmful to add them too.

Hello DIV,

Those commands are customizable - however we are by default using Ctrl + Home for "Go to Pages":

If you change the shortcut for "Go to Pages" to something else - you should then be able to assign "Ctrl + Home" to do the same as the default "Home".

It might be that in Word Ctrl + Home is needed, but in our product and other PDF tools Home and End are taking you to the start and end of the document, and for previous next page you have Page Up and Page Down :)

Kind regards,
Stefan

Can I give this request a +1?
I never open PDF X-change Editor without wishing for this implementation of Ctrl+Home and End. It's implemented everywhere else. For example, the Firefox pdf viewer has it. It can't be difficult to implement, and would make a big difference to those of us who think with our fingers.
Thanks for a great product.

Hello, Opti

Thank you for the post, but... did you read my post above? What you request is already possible, you simply need to customize your shortcuts using the extensive UI customization menu we offer.

The defaults for these will not be changing at this time, but you are definitely free to make the changes you envision for your own application locally.

Hi, Daniel.

Whist it's great that users can add their own customised shortcuts, it's still not clear why this shouldn't be a default.

Using your argument we could say that there's no need for Home on its own to do anything, nor Ctrl+S, and so on. But they are so useful, and de facto industry standard, that it does make sense that they would be defaults, rather than asking users to manually add those shortcuts in.

Secondly, you mention that Ctrl+Home is already assigned to "Go to Pages". I cannot find that command, and actually I have no idea what it practically does, because I have never seen any action occur at all when I press Ctrl+Home within PDF-XChange. Apparently it is a little-known way to bring focus back to the page viewer (the main pane) by keyboard navigation.

I support having keyboard alternatives to using the mouse. But I wonder how many people would even be aware that Ctrl+Home has this default functionality within PDF-XChange. And whether it might be better served with a different default shortcut?
Shift+Home is currently unassigned, and might be a better candidate to assign as the default shortcut for "Go to Pages". (Alt+Home is currently also unassigned, but might interfere with Alt combinations to access the menu/ribbon.)

By the way, it seems that Ctrl+End is not already assigned, so apparently there's no impediment to implementing that request.

To be clear, the request is not to remove functionality of the existing Home and End shortcuts, but rather to duplicate their functionality with Ctrl+Home and Ctrl+End.

I have passed this on to the development team for consideration.

Update - the development team have given their input here:

"This is an incomplete observation... because users have named such apps that are text processors, by nature. They always have an active cursor on the page, for which the Home/End jumps to the start/end of the text line. In that case, for sure, the Ctrl/Shift should be used for Home/End additionally - to reach the start/end of the doc. But if we check the PowerPoint for example, where is no permanent active cursor for the input (like in Editor, Acrobat etc) - we may see that it works differently - the Home/End simply jumping to the edge of doc."

So I'm afraid this setup is unlikely to change.
