Thanks for that Jeff,

according to MSDN Win 8.1 is still in "Preview" stage so hopefully your customer is getting bleeding edge updates not stable.

I'm downloading a Win 8.1 preview ISO now and will test build 211 on there and let you know what happens.

It might be prudent, once we know what's happening to update your SDK to 211 and rebuild your app and push it to your clients.

Will update as soon as I have a result.

Ok. I will put a new build together using 211.

But this won't resolve the issue even if it does work with 211. The fact still remains that there will be a lot of software out there with build before 211 that will crash with Win8.1 preview. My guess is that build 211 will not make a difference on my client's machine, but I'll give it a try.

Hi Jeff,

Do let us know how your tests with build 211 go. Also please note that Microsoft might change/fix quite a few things between this version of Windows 8.1 and the final stable one - and this problem might disappear on it's own.

Regards,
Stefan

Hi Jeff,

I just finished setting up and testing the 8.1 preview image and 211 runs smoothly in there.
I also ran build 201 and it is ticking along nicely also.

I'm really keen to hear what you find there, especially if 211 does work for your client.
But this won't resolve the issue even if it does work with 211. The fact still remains that there will be a lot of software out there with build before 211 that will crash with Win8.1 preview.
True, however since the End User 201 is not crashing the root of the issue may be more localized. Lets see what your client gets with 211.

Do you want to send us your 201 app for me to test on my Win8.1? if it works then the issue may be more specific to your one client.

hoping...

Yes, running my old install on your Win8.1 would be a great test.

Just go to the link below

http://www.lucion.com/downloads-old.html

Then download and run the "FileCenter 7.1 Setup" link.

When you install, just check the "30 Day Trial" box.

Then when the program opens, click on the "Edit Tab". Clicking that tab will attempt to place your embedded ViewerAX in our window.

Please let me know what happens.

Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

so FileCenter 7.1 runs fine on my W8 but does crash on my W8.1 Preview when the Edit tab is launched:

Report Id: 75d349de-e017-11e2-9b1a-000c29919bbd

Can you provide me the 211 build of FileCenter and I'll see if that makes any difference?

Here is the 211 build.

http://www.lucion.com/files/_FileCenterSetup8.exe

Let me know the results.

Shouldn't this be a concern that it works on Win8 but not Win8.1, even the old stuff?

Thanks Jeff,

indeed the same crash.

For sure something needs to be done. I have one of the developers looking into it now. We need to know what's happening before we can make any call on what we should do. Since it's reproduced I'm sure we'll find out.

Looks like it had to do with the way I was doing the Registriation-Free manifest file. Delphi allows you to compile these things into a resource file.

I just took it all out of code and went back with the traditional regsvr way of registering the component.

Sorry for the false alarm. Thanks again for all your help and outstanding support.

Have the same issue: Under Windows 8.1 (final version, installed yesterday) the registration free loading of the activex control doesn't work. My application crashes in combase.dll. Tried it with the newest version 2.5.212 too, and created a new manifest file from your template. If I remove the manifest and install the activex control, it works. Until Windows 8 registration free loading worked perfectly.

It would be nice, if there is a way to use registration free loading under Windows 8.1 too.
