Printer Settings: Paper versus Layout

Post by Peter2 »

Some small ideas ...

Layout Type: "Standard" is confusing - what is standard? Maybe better something like "same as 'Standard' above" ...

"Scaling" versus "Scale to fit": Is it correct that "Scale to fit" overrides the "Scaling"? If yes, "scaling" should be greyed out to avoid the display of two different scaling ..

EDIT:
The same with "Page size" and "Sheet size".
If I have "Page Size: Standard A3" and "Sheet Size: A0" and "Size: 150 * 222 mm" -> then "Standard A3" is not used any more and should be greyed out.
Right? Or maybe I'm wrong ...??

"Mirror by X / Y": Every CAD and Vector and Survey-system has X and Y in different directions. Maybe better "vertical / horizontal axis"

EDIT2: The input fields for custom paper sizes don't accept Tabstops. Why?

Peter

PS: I could post this topic "as sticky". is this intended?

Hi Peter,

Can you please provide screenshots marking the positions of those texts that you are referring to, as it's not clear where exactly those are.
You also don't mention whether this is for the Editor or another of our products but I assume it's Editor you are commenting on. Am I right?

Regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan

it is for the printer-settings. I will add screenshots later.

EDIT:
Here is the image.

a)
I have to modify my first posting: Section "layout" does not use the word "Standard" for "Sheet size"; it uses "Auto". But the problem is the same for user: what is auto?

b)
After a lot of testing I think that I understand now the different "scaling". The confusing is that the three sections "paper / Graphic / Layout" are displayed like "three equal feature" and it is not clear what influences what (paper and Graphic belong together, Layout is separate)

c)
"Multiple pages per sheet". I had a short text and tried "6 pages per sheet", but it previewed only 2 pages. Could not reproduce it again ...

d)
"Multiple pages per sheet": Seem to be a problem like b) - I selected "Page size: A4 / Scale 100 % / 4 pages on an A0" - and it worked, also I can not place "4 A4" unscaled on an A0 ...

So, as a compendium:
It is not easy to understand all settings, and maybe some design of the dialogue could be improved.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the images.
Page and Sheet are two separate things.
The Page is what comes to the printer, and the "sheet" is what it outputs to the new PDF document that it will create.
If you imagine you are printing pages to a hardware device - the sheets of paper are separate from the page content placed on them.
It's the same here.

For your image 1.jpg - the first scaling is that of the page - and you specify to NOT scale the contents on it, the second is scaling the whole page relative to the sheet. If sheet size is left to Auto - the sheet would originally be created with the same size as the page that comes to be placed on it, but then the page could be scaled as specified in your options.

I could not reproduce the problem from your 2.jpg - I can see correctly 6 pages in the preview window.

For image 3 - the settings seem OK - however this will effectively zoom your pages at 200% as to fit 4 pages of A4 paper on the 16 times larger A0 sheet.

In most cases leaving the sheet options to Auto, and letting the printing application handle "multiple pages per sheet" is what I would recommend.

Regards,
Stefan
