I need a way to build a citation from bookmarks

Post by RogerFeeley »

I work with lots of technical specifications. Some have sections that are nested within volumns, parts, sections and subsections.

A typical citation might "Core 4.2/Vol 6/Part B/Section 2.4.2". All of this is available in the bookmarks

What I would like is to be able to right click on my document and and select "Citation". the software would scan up the heirarchy of the bookmarks and build a delimited string showing where we are in the document. I could then paste the citation into some other document or email.

There might be some setting necessary. In my case, I would want to terminate each portion of the citation at a colon. Using my example above, if we use the full bookmark, the full citation would read:

Core_4.2/Vol 6: Core System Package [Low Energy Controller volume]/ Part B: LINK LAYER SPECIFICATION/2.4 Data Channel PDU/2.4.2 LL Control PDU

While this is still a LOT better than nothing and would be a huge convenience, it would be nice to be able to impose some rules.
In my case the terminations might be
-- Terminate at a colon if present

Since they don't use the word 'Section' I would leave the 2.4... intact.
Another rule might be 'terminate after first numeric string.

If I were doing it, I would make the rules heirarchical. That is, I could create a list of rules and the first one that terminates wins.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the post and suggestion - I can certainly pass the request on, but I suspect that this would be quite a difficult and long-winded implementation, and would be very specific. I suspect that the answer to the request will likely be no, at least until we have a greater demand to justify the work involved.

Thanks,
