Plans or strategies for opening Microsoft IRM marked PDF files?

Post by rkg82tg »

Some PDF files served over the Microsoft cloud cannot be opened by many PDF tools, other than Microsoft's own Azure IRM viewer, Foxit Reader, and NitroPDF, as documented here:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/micros ... -worldwide

Are there any plans for making PDF-XChange Editor compatible with these PDFs?

Attempting to open such a file results in:

"This PDF file is protected

You'll need a different reader in order to view this content:
Download a compatible PDF reader.

This PDF Document has been protected.
The reader you are using does not support opening files protected by Microsoft Office "

Our use case involves trying to identify who the author is of a PDF that was generated by a member of our own team who left the company, but we cannot even examine the file properties to see who created the PDF. And the Microsoft Azure viewer, which works well enough, does not display any file properties either, just the content, which in our case is not specific enough to identify the author, and hence locate the source document for the PDF.

Hi, rkg82tg

We are planning to support Microsoft IRM, however it is unfortunately something that is considered long term as there are items higher on the priority list, such as our significant Accessibility improvements (Required by recent legislation) which is planned for version 9. After that we will begin looking at the challenges involved in these features and plan from there.

Simply put, it is coming in the distant future, but it is likely not something you will see this year.

Kind regards,
