More colors tray improvements

Post by MedBooster »

image.png
image(2).png
image(3).png

see the attached 3 screenshots. (orange is an already existing preset)

When choosing a rectangle preset and choosing add custom color it overwrites my already custom orange color, even though I have a lot of open slots . How do I make it overwrite the 2nd instead of the 1st, because when I click on another box I lose the color .

Basically, this occurs when trying to save the color of a preset to custom colors.

Also; another row of custom colors wouldn't hurt.... 24 would be better than 16 in my opinion :) Maybe it could expand once you reach >16 custom color presets?

Re: add to custom colors overwrites already existing preset instead of choosing a new box

Post by rakunavi »

Hi MedBooster,

The following three steps should work.

  1. Click on the desired "Custom colors" position to select it.
  2. Specify the desired color from the dialog in the right side.
  3. Finally, click the "Add to Custom Colors" button.
Do you select the desired "Custom colors" position by clicking on it?

Best regards,
rakunavi

obviously that would work, but in this case I don't want the color to change when I click on one of the empty colors.

Another question:
When exporting settings, are custom colors included? Would be nice if they were...

Suggestion:
When you choose an existing preset with a certain color, and add choose add to custom colors – it would be nice to be able to choose which spot you want to add it to (rather than it automatically overwriting the first spot/box). This is to save time.... to not have to find the perfect color again.... because that is difficult as you have to change hue sat lum red green blue... many variables

Hello MedBooster,

We would export your custom tools with the custom colours selected for them. I am not sure if the colours in the colour picker itself will be remembered - as those might actually be stored by windows. If it is important for you - I can ask a colleague and check, but I would not rely on those colour lists being copied between machines.

Also this colours dialogue is served by windows - so I am not sure we can change it's behaviour much!

Kind regards,
Stefan

Hello all,

just tried it: the Custom Colors are all saved when exporting the PDF-XChange Editor settings.

For completeness, here is an older thread in which an improved color picker dialog was already suggested.

Hi guys,

thanks for all the input. There is a ticket for this and it's priority has been raised.

RT#5602: Feature request :: Editor :: Color Picker in "Color" Window

I do not have an ETA for delivery of said feature, it is in the hands of the gods now...

It will happen, maybe for V10 next year, we'll have to wait and see.

+1 for this proposal. This color picker seems to be even better than the Microsoft Office one referenced further above.

Also, already the selection of basic colors seems to be more rounded and more logical than the somewhat arbitrary choice in the current dialog in PDF-XChange Editor:

Although, of course, it must be said that a color picker with an (approximately) circular color arrangement makes a lot of sense from the point of view of color physiology and the color wheel:

yes a circular color wheel looks good too.

What I think is the most important is that you can drag and drop to copy and that empty slots are filled up when you change a color, and that the existing ones are not overwritten...

also another row of empty slots that you could add favourites to would also be amazing... IDK why no one seems to have responded to this specific request (of more favourite color slots)

This was under another post I think, but it was also suggested that you would allow to choose a color based on color coordinates, instead of the three RGB sliders (an option between which you prefer would still be nice though I reckon)

In PowerToys on Windows you can get this color picker, so that is the type of "color coordinates" I'm referring to

HEX, as opposed to the current RGB

I think that is usually what you see in HTML

I just checked with the guys, and the new colour picker will both show and accept Hex codes.

Type a Hex code to set the colour, or use the sliders and get the ex code - both will be possible.

Is that what you are asking for?

Never mind, I've changed my mind, what IS more important than being able to copy slots is the 1-row color code you were saying you were planning on adding.

I imagine it would be really useful for graphic designers. If there is a color you need you just use a color-picker (like in Powertoys)
image.png
image.png (3.87 KiB) Viewed 6673 times
and just plop it in to get the color you need. Having to change all those 6+ values every time is such a pain.

In my opinion it just doesn't make sense to have ALL those slots for preset colors (that you can not change) and only 2 rows of custom colors.
People use custom colors more than those presets

Hello, MedBooster

It is worth noting that our software is not intended to be used for graphic design, but I will pass this along to the Dev team for review. At this moment I cannot make any promises though, development is fairly far along for this feature, and with a deadline now in mind, it may be too late to add complex items for the initial release.

Hello, again!

Just a followup, I searched back through conversations with the Dev team, and I do have a confirmation of an eyedropper which will work across the entire desktop, not only inside the editor, as well as a preview image of what the UI looked like a few weeks ago (note that this is still subject to change, and may not be representative of the final product):

If you use OBS studio you would know that even IT lets you drag and drop colors in the color palette :)

So that's what's most important (followed right by more custom color slots) – I doubt that so many "main" color slots are needed by most..

The screenshot you sent looks good though :)

It's definitely great news that changes and improvements to the Color Picker are planned as presented above.

However, I still believe that a circular arrangement of a color picker is the optimum, both visually and ergonomically, in order to quickly find and pick the best color for your purpose.

Any update?
There's not one day where I'm not reminded about how useful it would be to have more custom color slots, and simply to be able to drag and drop colors to copy them
That should be priority #1 in my opinion
(Happy Easter/hope you had a nice Easter)

edit:
no way to drag and drop or copy paste to other color slots in the new 368 version it seems?

edit #2:

well, sadly none of ChatGPT's suggestions also did not work :/
Is there really no way to rearrange the custom palette?
image.png
edit:
even in DaVinci resolve, you can drag and drop colors in the palette.
image(1).png
I'm really hoping for more custom color slots here :)))

Hello, MedBooster

As you see higher up in the thread, We are working on a new color palette entirely (from the ground up) for version 10. As such, the current one you are using is not in active development. For the moment I do not know exactly which features will be included when this finally ships, but I can promise that it will not be coming in a V9 release, you will need to wait for V10 before we see any further color palette changes.

Mamma mia.... You guys... have outdone yourself ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Just passed my final exam for this semester, and now I update PDF-xce and see it finally has an AWESOME color picker, much better than I've seen in ANY other program.
Thank you so much for listening to me on increasing the amount of custom color slots, it is seemingly limitless now... Or is there even a limit now?
21.06.2023 PDFXEdit_XSHak9FNWX.gif
Now you can finally also get the color from a preset without even using any color picker like PowerToys'...
21.06.2023 PDFXEdit_pEqsJy3psp.gif

You can not change the order of the presets, but whatever, there's probably some software limitation to that.
(There's always something one can improve) :)

Thank you for also NOT having an upper limit for colors visible when choosing a stroke color (including, most importantly, custom colors)

This is great! PDF-xce's color picker/chooser mechanism is officially on the upper echelons of color picking.

Software (such as Samsung Notes, or notetaking apps in general) seems to not give users enough freedom in color picking, but you have stuck a nice balance between the standard color assortment you provide, and the custom palette you can modify. So don't change anything, it works great as it is :)

And this as well!

It seems all wishes have been fulfilled regarding the color-picker tool... based on other posts as well.
However,
I would suggest adding an option to drag-and-drop to reorder custom colors in the menu :)

Hello,

Drumroll please!
#6857: FR: Re-order custom color via drag/drop
The Dev team has accepted the request. I should note that custom color re-ordering will likely only be available in the customization dialog where you select new colors to add, not in the main application panes/tabs where you are using the colors directly inside a document.

Any news on drag and drop to reorder? It seems it still isn't possible...
drag-and-drop is essential because that way you don't have to rebind the colors to specific tools, and still retain the color order of other tools.

This request for changing the order of comment styles is relevant, as an option to change both would be game-changing.

Hello, MedBooster

I have just seen confirmation that this item is nearing completion, it should hopefully be present in our 10.5 feature release.

Re: More colors tray improvements

Would you consider adding a (perhaps optional) "recent colors" tray? Which would remember colors used, without adding them to your custom tray?

I would find this more useful than the "standard color" tray which I don't use.

Hello, MedBooster

I can run it by the dev team, but I cannot make any promises in that regard.

I guess a row of recent colors would be around 8, depending on your DPI scaling setttings as you can't resize the "more colors" window

It will be optional right?

Anyway it would be a great addition

Actually, if you're open to allowing for more customization, I for example don't need the standard colors.

Is there a limit to the quantity of custom colors you can add?

Have you reconsidered adding a keyboard shortcut to open this pop-up "fill color" or "stroke color" menu? At the cursor position would be great , without having to me in the format tab or using the properties pane

Only time will tell.

#2, There is still no guarantee that a recent colors list will be happening, so I cannot say one way or the other.
#3, At this time no, I can confirm that we do not plan to add keyboard shortcuts to these items yet.
