Issue when copying text with emojis from Word and inserting as RTF.

Post by David.P »

Hello Forum and PXE Support Team,

I've just realized that text from Word that contains emojis cannot be inserted properly or at all as RTF in PDF-XChange Editor.

Please refer to the attached Word document for details.

Thanks for looking into this,

Best regards,
David

Hi all,

Strange enough, when you open the Word-document with PDF-XChange Editor, the emojis are shown correctly.

When going via the Home-ribbon > Edit Objects > Text Elements, they seem to consist of several (text) elements.

While in Edit Objects > Text Elements mode, you can draw a rectangle around the emoji and move it as a whole.

Still while in Edit Objects > Text Elements-mode, when you click on the emoji and then drag with the mouse, you can split it up in several elements.

Trying to copy/paste the emoji to some place elsewhere on the page does not seem to work.

Kind regards.

Hello,

I have reproduced this and passed it along to the Dev team, I seems that in this case, the Emoji data goes beyond "rich text" and causes the copied information to be classified as a "metafile", hence the appearance of our Paste as metafile option. However, it seems this option lacks the correct coloring for the emojis as well. I am unsure if this is a side effect of our font handling, or simply what is present in the clipboard, but I have passed this whole topic, and all of our observations to the Dev team.

I cannot promise if a fix is possible at this time, as I cannot be sure if the problem is caused by what Word puts into the clipboard, but we will look into it and see what we can do from this end.

[Edit]
Unfortunately, After some investigation by the Dev team, we have found that the issues with the "Rich Text" and "Metafile" options are not something that we can change, this is how the Metafile and Rich text data both are presented in the clipboard contents, and it is not possible for us to assume any additional information from this without it leading to other errors when copying other plain text items
(EG: It would not be ideal if every receipt/bank statement where you spent $121, was replaced emojis during copy/paste...)

As for the issue where "plain text" paste specifically has replaced one of the emojis with 2 separate items, that might be able to be improved, so we will look into the "plain text" side of this further and see what we can do. So here is a ticket for that specific aspect of this issue:
#7256: Bug: Paste as "plain text" - Errors with emojis
