Hello.
For some time now I have noticed that files attached in pdf (*.jpg) are not opened. Nothing happens at all.
I have the pdf-XChange Editor Plus, built 10.6.0 from May 2025 under current Windows 11. No current updates are available for both.
The attached files are not corrupt or damaged and can be opened in image editing programs without any problems. But when I click on the paperclip in pdf-XchangeEditor Plus nothing happens.
If I open the attachment panel via CTRL SHIFT A, I can see that the attachment is there, but here too, opening is not possible either by double-clicking or via the menu in the panel. No menu item is grayed out there either. It is possible to download the embedded *.jpg files and embedding audio files also works without any problems. Embedded *.pdf files also work.
I have not found anything in the settings or the manual on how to stop this behavior.
Can anyone give me advice on how to open embedded *.jpg files again?

Guten Tag.

Re: File attachment tool: embedded files are not opened
Hello, christian woelm
The most likely case is related to this option in the security preferences, resulting in the file being blocked from opening: But to investigate beyond speculation, I would need a copy of the file you are working with, and an export of your application settings (Specifically, the "common" settings, we don't need the other items for this). You can export your settings via "File > manage settings > export settings".
Then place the export in a zip archive with the PDF document, and Either
1. upload them here Or...
2. If there is sensitive information inside, please send them in an email to Support@PDF-XChange.com, with a link to this forum post.
Kind regards,

Dear Dan.
Thank you for your kind offer and the fast reply.
You'll find the zip file in this thread.
It contains:
The pdf-doc
The Settings
The screenshot from the attachment name.
Again, thank you for your help.

Re: File attachment tool: embedded files are not opened
Hello, christian woelm
With your file and Editor settings, this still seems to work fine on my end... So, in looking closely at your screenshot for a moment: I noticed that the icon displayed is not an "image graphic" icon... This should be pulled from the system default for that file type, and a lack of appearance here could indicate that your device does not have a default application selected for JPG files. As we send the request to windows for handling, if there is no jpg handler, it may just fail silently.
Can you open the windows "default apps" list, click on the "app by file type" link(near the bottom), and scroll through the list (sadly there is no search function) until you find jpg. If it does have a default app, please change it to something else, and then back to the desired app, or choose the windows Photos app. Then restart the computer, and see if that resolves the issue in our Editor.

Re: File attachment tool: embedded files are not opened
Dear Dan.
Indeed, you were right.
For *.jpg the Default was Photoshop Elements 2024.
I have since a couple of weeks Version 2025 and deinstallt Version 2024.
But the Standard App Tool has not noticed it or changed it.
With your help, it now works again properly in the PDF-Xchange Editor to open embedded *.jpg files.
I would never ever found this solution on my own, so thank you very much for your kind and fast help.
