Multi-row and coloured tabs

Hello folks at Tracker Software!

I only just came across PDF-XChange Viewer this past week, amazing as it may seem (my only excuse being that there's such a vast amount of software out there so it's easy to miss seeing even a gem like PDF-XChange Viewer).

Speaking only about VIEWING of PDF documents, I have written articles about the severe shortcomings of Adobe Reader and my annoyance with Reader 9.0 not only being more bloated than ever but also how it dropped out a basic feature. See for example my iTWire article at http://www.itwire.com/content/view/22043/1127/. In one of the linked articles a representative of Adobe Systems explained why they were "forced" to remove this feature sue to issues with Windows Vista (hard to believe, and most unfortunate).

UPDATE (22 December 2008): I have just uploaded my artcile to iTWire, see "PDF-XChange Viewer — the best free PDF viewer yet?" at http://www.itwire.com/content/view/22426/1127/

I have now made PDF-XChange Viewer my preferred viewer, since it's even better than my previous favorite (Foxit Reader). The ability to keep more than 10 entries in the recent files list is fantastic, and the ability to pin some of these is even more outstanding! I'll soon be writing an iTWire article about my newly-found treasure.

I have a few suggestions/requests regarding tabs in PDF-XChange Viewer.

They're nice-to-have rather than critical, and they're available in the two browsers that I use (Firefox, and Avant Browser), and find them extremely handy for a "power user" who views many documents every day:
  • - Make the active tab stand out a bit more, by bolding the text in the tab, or increasing it's background colour contrast versus the other tabs.
  • - Allow multiple rows of tabs (maybe allowing you to set a limit for the number of rows of tabs).
  • - Have an option for coloured tabs (as per a Firefox add-on)
  • - Allow the tabs to be optionally placed at bottom of the window, to reduce "clutter" at the top. This is something I do with Firefox and Avant Browser.

Thanks Tony - your comments and the review are very much appreciated and we will of course look into your suggestions and see what can be done over the next couple of releases/updates which occur approx every 6-8 weeks.

Re: Multi-row and coloured tabs - 2012 Version 5 inclusion?

I just had a friendly chat with your Sales Manager about upgrading from PDF-XChange PRO v4 to v5. He indicated that there are lots of enhancements coming to v5 as year 2012 progresses.

I use the viewer every day, with quite a few tabs opened -- sometimes even reaching the built-in limit of the numbers of tabs concurrently open, which limit I'd also like to see increased. It's a constant annoyance when you have more than about ten tabs open, my one and only usability gripe about the PDF-XChange Viewer.

The attached screenshot shows how I have multiple rows of colored tabs at the bottom of Firefox. It doesn't of course show how they can be moved around and grouped by topic/theme (see the request by ingber at https://forum.pdf-xchange.com/ ... =35&t=4344 which I support too).

Are the above changes going to be included in version 5?

-----------------
By the way, when I tried to submit this post with its the attached screenshot image, I got the error "The extension jpg is not allowed" ... Surely not! ... So I used the GIF format instead, but that generated a similar error message "The extension gif is not allowed" ... What's going on with your phpBB file attachment options?

As an interim alternative, please view the screenshot at my Australian website http://notestracker.com/misc/Example_of ... Viewer.jpg or the USA backup site http://notestracker.net/misc/Example_of ... Viewer.jpg

Hi,

Thanks for youre suggestions - all have been forwarded to our project tream for future consideration...

With regards attachments - all must be zipped - we dont allow inline images - because we get inundated with spurious posts - many of wich contain Spam message posted by BOT engine - ignore - to be deleted by admin - so all must be zipped (also for space reasons) and then no one is offended if a post is obviously spam - and we will delete on review.

HTH

It appears that the multi-row display of tabs has not yet been implemented. While I understand that this feature may not be universally popular, some users do find it beneficial. Perhaps pdfX could consider introducing a setting that would allow users to enable or disable this feature?

Hello farhill,

You have commented in quite an old topic (more than 10 years!), however it is correct that such a feature does not yet exist. I am afraid that it is a bit too niche and as such our devs priorities are elsewhere, so I can not promise that such a feature can be added in the foreseeable future.

Kind regards,
Stefan
