Manually created bookmarks appear in the next page

Post by angel outon »

Hi all.

I am not sure if I am doing this correctly or not. My problem is that I have some PDF I like to manually insert some bookmarks. If the desired place is above the end of the page by some extent, the bookmark is created fine but if there is "little" space at the end of the page, the bookmark is created in the next page.

Take a look at the image for further clarification.

Any ideas?

Hello angel outon,

Could you please post a sample document that displays this issue?

Could you please also go to Help> About and let us know what version and build you are using?

Thank you!
If posting files to this forum, you must archive the files to a ZIP, RAR or 7z file or they will not be uploaded.
Thank you.

Sure. Practically any PDF. Use this as example. Try to set a bookmark in the last items in each page (1. AUTOIMAGEN, 3. DEFINICION DE LA SITUACION and 4. MOTIVOS, SENTIMIENTOS, INTENCIONES, ACTITUDES.

Put the item at the top of the screen and you'll notice bookmarks 1 and 4 goes to the next page and 3 appears correctly.

My version is the last 6.0 (317.1) (I just updated just in case). The same happened with version 5 (January 2016)

I find that this happens every time when the following page takes up a larger part of the screen than the intended page when creating the link. So probably this is normal and intended behavior.

Just make sure that the intended page takes up more than half the screen height when creating the link.

Hello angel outon,

I just tested with your own file - but was unable to reproduce the issue.
I used the text selection tool, highlighter the text you said I should try with and then hit Ctrl-Shift-B on my keyboard, and you can see the resulting bookmarks - they work correctly.

I suspect that the bookmarks you create are pointing to the correct page, but to coordinates 0,0 on it - which is usually the lower left corner of that page, so when the bookmark is clicked - that lower left corner is shown at the top of the rendering area, and it seems as if the next page is shown. If you switch to single page view (non continuous) - these same bookmarks will open the correct page.
Please let us know what steps exactly are you doing to make your bookmarks and we should be able to advise further. Please also attach a copy of that same file - but with the bookmarks created at your end so that we can take a look!

Regards,
Stefan

Hi David,

Ahh! Thanks for this. Indeed I can confirm the bug happens if the next page takes up more than 50% of the screen (and is effectively considered the active page). Will make a ticket to get that sorted!

Stefan

Thanks Stefan!

As I said however I think this is a feature not a bug, because if this behavior of PDF-XChange Editor would be changed, in turn you probably would not be able to create a link that points to the top of a page.

Hi David,

It certainly is a bug - as I was creating a bookmark from a text selection - so the Editor should ensure that the text in question is visible when the bookmark gets created.
Here is the ticket number:
#3532: Editor 317.1: Issues with creating bookmarks from selected text when the next page is active.
We will update this topic as soon as there are any further news.

Stefan

Hi Stefan,

if you create a bookmark from a text selection at the bottom of a page I agree that it would be very useful when the bookmark would never point to the subsequent page, no matter how much of the screen height that subsequent page already takes up.

That's correct. The issue is if I need to bookmark something at the bottom of the page. I don't understand why that is not possible.

I guess you don't need my sample, isn't?

BTW. I use first add bookmark and then Set destination.
I like to add if you can have the set destination button directly in the bookmarks toolbar will be great. In my real case, I had to setup like a 800+ bookmarks and without this feature I just suggest, there is a bunch of extra clicks to set the bookmark.

Thanks. I'll wait.

If Stefan has managed to reproduce the issue, no sample should be necessary :)

Simply go into "customize toolbars" mode and then move a copy of the "Set Destination" button (and any other button you need, for that matter) to the Bookmarks toolbar.

Good Morning everyone,

Just a quick update that the issue we discussed in this topic is now fixed and the fix will be available in build 318 of the Editor which is planned for release around the end of the month if all goes well.
