Merge PDFs on one page/sheet

Post by dbphillips »

I have two small PDFs I want to get on one page. That, or cut and paste an EPS onto a PDF page which already has some content.

Is there a way to do this? I've searched, but it doesn't seem to have been addressed.

Thanks.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the post - currently, the only way to do this would be to print to one of our PDF printers (XChange Lite comes with an Editor license), and use the Multiple Pages Per Sheet setting within the Editor's print dialogue:

Hi Daniel,

Please try combining the two files first and then print them as Will suggested.
You can combine files from File -> New Document -> Combine files into a single PDF.

So, I save the multiple pages as one using the PDF printer and the resolution goes way down (converted from vector to raster?) and the bottom edge of the second page gets slightly cut off. How do I preserve the quality?

To merge your two files, you can better use PDF-XChange Editor's own feature:
- Click File > New Document > Combine Files in a Single PDF
- Click the Add Files... button and then select your files and click Open
- Via the button "Page Range Options" you can select specific pages out of each document
If you like, you can add the same document multiple times if you should need separate ranges of pages to merge
- Finally click OK

Unfortunately, you can not immediately merge alternating pages (one from the first document, one from the second document, and so on).

Best regards.

Yeah, that's actually how I merged, but that makes two pages. The only way I could see to get the contents of both pages on one page was to use the PDF printer, but then the quality goes way down. I guess it gets converted to raster. I would have thought the 2400 dpi output setting would mitigate this, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

When printing two pages on one, via the PDF-XChange Printer, it seems indeed like the text is turning to bitmap, but at my side - by printing at 600 dpi - it is fairly good.

Maybe you should check the "Graphics" parameters in your printers settings.

For me, they are all set to "No downsampling", "No compression".

Sorry that I am only guessing ...

If possible you can also post a few pages of an original PDF and the result that you get after printing two pages on one.

Hi guys,

unfortunately there is no other way at present to combine the content into a single page. The process you described will rasterize the result so Willy's suggestion to use a higher resolution is your best approach I believe.

Here's the (rather roundabout) method I use. It's not automated enough to do with many pages, but once in a while it works, and preserves all the vector items:

1. make a stamp out of one of the pages. Tools > Comment and Markup Tools > Stamps Pallet. Click on the open folder symbol to Add New Stamp from File... You then pick the file for the page you plan to add. At the bottom, I have a target collection named "zzzz" for these stamps, so they don't clutter up stamps I care about.
2. On the second pdf, use Document > Resize Pages to resize the page (if you need to resize it to fit the page you've made a stamp from).
3. In the stamps pallet, select the stamp you made out of the second page and place it on the first page.
4. Right click on the page placed as a stamp (after it's positioned correctly) and pick "Flatten".

I also use this to overlay vector pages or images on other pdf's.

Thanks for the info. Mathew, hopefully others watching this topic can do the same :)
