Can't type Chinese

Post by Nelson Tai »

Hi there,

This is my first time to use PDF-XChange Viewer, it surprises me!
I love your product!

But I find a problem.
I can't type Chinese in both "Typewriter Tool" and "Sticky Note".
Is it possible to improve these functions in the future?

Best regards,
Nelson

Hi Nelson,

This is because currently we restrict the font available for these functions to Arial and there are no Chinese characters available in this font.

In a forthcoming release you will be able to select your any available font for these functions and this will resolve the issue - provided you select a font that does provide Chinese Character support of course.

Hi,

In Build 1.018 of the PDF-XChange Viewer, I still can not type and view in both "Typewriter Tool", "Highlight comment" and "Sticky Note".

Does Build 1.018 really support CJK fonts? Or maybe something wrong in my PC?

Thanks & Regards,

Hi,

Are you able to modify the font succussfully to a desired font ?

Select the typewriter tool - type some text - then right click and then select the 'Show Text formatting Toolbar' (or CTRL+E) and then select a suitable CJK FONT - and type - assuming you have such fonts installed.

In our tests here (using copy/paste this works 100% ok)

You should be able to set any font you wish as the default font for future use using the options provided.

Please do come back if you still have problems.

Thanks for your reply.

Based on your method, I can type and view Chinese in Typewriter, but the command "Make current property as default" does not work. I need to change font every time I add a new typewriter. It should be fixed.

On the other hand, I can not find "Show Text formatting Toolbar" for both "Highlight comment" and "Sticky Note". How can I change the font like that for Typewriter?

BTW, why not just put the default text settings (ex: font) in the [Preferences] dialog? This would be more straightforward.

tomylin, I can confirm what you said, and I totally agree with you.

Also, since "Properties" is one of the toolbar, why can't I stick it to the toolbar area?

It is by design and because the content of this toolbar is dependant on the tool/comment currently selected/focused.

Changing this toolbar when in the toolbar area would rearrange all toolbars - which as you can appreciate would be undesirable !

I did come back and reported the problems.
Any words about this?

Thanks!

Hi all,

Further to the problem reported - regarding typing and showing Chinese/Japanese/Korean text etc - would very much appreciate you testing this release before we make it available to all - you will need to create new files to test the mark-up features fully :

https://www.pdf-xchange.com/PDFXCview_Beta.zip

Please download and unzip into your current installation location - replacing the existing PDFXCView.exe - you will find this located in a sub folder (which may vary depending on the product you originally downloaded) under this main install folder :

C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\......

Many thanks and look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Everything looks good. I love it.
The only one question is how to set default font.
I prefer to set default English font and non-English font separately in preferences dialog.
How do you guys think about it?

Will need to think about that Nelson - setting one default font is not a problem to accommodate - but setting 2 - well that could be a problem.

Great! What a great software!!!
Thanks for your effort.

I got only one problem about the file size and typewriter.

I found out that the PDF-XChange Viewer seems to be unstable (crashed often) when the typewriter box "contains both English and Chinese". In particular, the file size may grow unexpectedly (ex: 300KB -> 3MB when adding a typewriter box).

You can reproduce the problem as follows:
1. Open any pdf file, say A.pdf with file size 300KB
2. Add a typewriter (or text box tool/callout tool) box into A.pdf.
3. Type some English words and save file.
==> Now you can see a reasonable increase (in KB) on the size of A.pdf. It's fine, so far.
4. Type some Chinese words into the above box (just append to the English text), and then save file.
==> Now the size of A.pdf may increase up to 3MB or larger. It's obviously unreasonable. Note that the problem only occurs in typewriter/text box tool/callout tool box, not in Sticky notes and highlight comments. Maybe it's a bug, I guess! Hope it helps clarify.

BTW, the default Chinese font (Gulim now) still can not be changed (by "Make current property as default" ). It should be fixed in later releases.

Hi,

It is because for now, the viewer embeds all used fonts in a textbox and forms fields. (popups and sticky notes stores just text, not their appearances)

In a future builds it will be changed.

Thanks for your report.

Thanks for your answer.
Because lots of non-English fonts also include font settings for English character and number, I think it should be enough to set one default font.
