Multi-page viewing feature request

Post by peter suma »

Would you please consider adding multi-page viewing (being able to view as many pages on the screen in whatever layout width and height that the user wants, same as Word can do for docx files).

The pdf reader inside Qiqqa (reference manager) has it and it is very useful. For large monitors or multiple monitors it is a major productivity gain and no other pdf reader except qiqqa's has it.

Hello Peter,

We do not have a special mode for this - but have you tried to drag the thumbnails pane's right border further right to make it wider?
While it won't cover 100% of the width of the Editor window - it can cover a pretty decent amount of it - and you can then make the thumbnails as large or as small as you want - and will have a multiple pages view that way:

Stefan ,

Wow that is an impressively fast response! Yeah Tracker ! That is way beyond expectation these days! Thank you!

Yes I saw the thumbnail feature but it inst the same at all as the full editing / reading / ability to markup a document and the the thumbnails use up way too much space between them so they really don't cut it. If you sit down and read thousands of research papers that are often very long in PDF Tracker for a few years on end you want the full on markup, reading etc...full experience to cover all your screen real estate. I would pay double personally for tracker for this and add a few features like save your desktop (the ability to save the currently open set of files; vertical and horizontal grouping of tabs to organize pdfs. Many times my system has 20 or more pdfs open for long periods of time if I reboot or a crash happens I loose the context.

There are many more features as well that could go into a professional plus version. I realize some of this will sound like a niche market, but roll it around and i think you will see as many people read more and more digitally that these types of features are not at all present or their underlying use cases well solved by your competition and that makes an opportunity for perhaps a higher end version of the reader, a line extension, with higher price if it must be, but the productivity gains would be very large for those of us needing these kinds of things.

In the end though, the multiple pages viewer is the number one feature of all these for me to ask for. Just asking that your product team take a serious look at it and really make sure that they have use people that have experience reading thousands of documents with the software before deciding.

Many thanks for listening and responding so quick, that's awesome!

Hello Peter,

If you want the Editing capabilities as well - have you tried the ribbon layout? There you can have many pages side by side (yes only on one row - but still more than two at a time) - and the Editing tools will be active.

As for the saving of the state - we do have sessions manager now - do give that a try as well under File -> Sessions...

Stefan

Ok will try those two. but do give some thought to the full on use all the screen space layout mode, I wager it will be a hit.
Did not know about the sessions manager.. Thanks!

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your feedback - we do appreciate it - and I will bring up for discussion the feature from the original post.
In the mean time - while again - not the exact solution - turn on ribbon layout and then also go to Window -> Split -> Horizontal Split - and you can have two ribbons of the same file - this should allow you to fill up your screen much better - and with more pages visible and editable at the same time.

Regards,
Stefan

This came up before, so +1 for giving Ribbon mode a wrap option to span several rows.

Hello,

By reading this topic, I have a few questions for Peter and Timur:

1) why the combination of the thumbnails pane and the page pane could not be a useful work around ?
(see attached print screen)

2) if you like to have editing possibilities while pages are presented so very small/tiny on the screen, what kind of editing is this ?
(selecting, deleting, inserting or moving pages is already possible via the thumbnails pane, and other things are - at my opinion - difficult to apply because the text is to small to read it)

Best regards.

Compare yourself. Here I did a search and emulated wrapped Ribbon via horizontal split. That's 10 pages on screen instead of just 4-5 pages. And at that zoom level (60%) I can even still read the text if I have to. Maybe more important I can make out layout difference at much smaller zoom levels (or screens) and still search/work within the document. This would be even more useful if Search offered an option to only display pages that include search hits.

Compare that to thumbnails, with their lack of marking, huge empty framing, inability to center on a specific range of pages, inability to work directly with, strange zoom behavior and general awkwardness to work with quickly via shortcuts. Of course thumbnails could be made more useful, too (especially for search results). ;)

Thanks Timur - It's noted here and understood. I can certainly see the value in that, so we'll pass it along :)

Give my 8 cores / 16 threads something to do. ;)

An "All pages continuous" mode might be even more useful for Standard mode where you can scroll by rows rather than by page.

Hi @all,

for completeness of information, there is also an earlier thread on this with additional strong votes here.

Thanks David - Hopefully that AHK script in that thread is still a suitable workaround for now.

If not super difficult to add & there's a slot vs critical updates, this would be a massive usability (readability, navigation, etc.) improvement vs trying to split views + open up duplicate tabs & windows + scroll &/or zoom each window separately & repeatedly.

Using Thumbnails as the main reading pain is not the best solution & also somewhat negates its purpose as a smaller, thumbnail navigation tool - also as others pointed out, can't edit/comment, etc. there.

Thanks!
