File > Properties > Document Properties > Description > "Application"

Post by Markt-a1b »

Having been unable to find, via cursory forum search, an existing topic that seems relevant, I will start this one here:

I have an original 8/18/2003 PDF document whose File > Properties > Document Properties > Description "Application:" field reads: ABBYY FineReader. No version of the latter is specified. Likewise, that same window's "Advanced" > "PDF Producer:" field is blank. The "PDF Version:" reads 1.5 (Acrobat 6.x).

After significant editing within Acrobat IX Pro, and editing of individual page within PDF-XChange Pro, the above-referenced "Application:" field in the newly Saved-As file is now blank in Acrobat and <unknown> in PDF-XChange, but the "PDF Producer:" field, in both programs, now displays "Adobe Acrobat Pro 11.0.0 Paper Capture Plug-in."

Yet, the exact same edited-and-saved file described immediately above, when uploaded to the Internet Archive, displays: "Ocr ABBYY FineReader 11.0 (Extended OCR)."

Where in this file is the Internet Archive's automated cataloging tools finding the above FineReader information, versus that displayed by the two editing programs? More to the point, am I able to find - and to edit - any or all of this information within PDF-XChange Pro?

Thanks! MarkT

More to my point,

Hello Mark,

Document Metadata, like this, is difficult to alter without damaging the document, likely the information your online tool is finding is stored in another location of the document that Editing software like our and Adobe does not check. Unfortunately we do not offer the ability to Edit most document metadata fields, as it is unnecessary, and could damage the document if done incorrectly.

Is there a specific reason you need this field to be removed?

Daniel: "... Is there a specific reason you need this field to be removed?"

Glad you asked, Daniel. I don't particularly *need* to change the data, but I would like to give credit where credit is due.

Both Acrobat Pro (XI and DC) and ABBYY FineReader 14 failed miserably when I tried to use them to change some basic elements in the referenced file - albeit to be applied throughout the entire 200-page document (e.g., font color). OTOH, PDF-XChange Pro did *almost* everything I needed it to do, with both aplomb and speed. If *only* I had discovered XChange earlier, it would have saved me both considerable expense and significant "manual hair loss." (cough!)

Thus I thought it might be possible to edit these fields to my liking.

In the meantime, though, I am not a bit surprised that tinkering with various under-the-hood items within a PDF file could cause it to self-destruct, but thought I would ask the questions, just to be sure.

Thank you for the explanation! MarkT

P.S. I now have a (new) license for ABBYY FineReader 15 Standard, but have not yet installed it. The designers and programmers *may* have addressed some or all of the limitations that have plagued me in 14 (although it *does* do exceptionally well at OCR), but I am not holding my breath. In any case, when the separately- discussed, minor line justification tweak is incorporated within XChange Pro, the program *should* continue to do everything I need it to do. So keep up the good work!
