Feature request, change to Restore Last Session

Post by ddk »

I'd like to see a change to the way Restore Last Session works. I turned this on so that if windows did one of its reboots, I wouldn't have to reopen all the PDFs I was viewing. However I often find I have finished viewing a PDF, manually click on the X to close PDFXE, only to find next time I open another PDF, it also opens the last one I was viewing. I see why. I didn't close the PDF, I closed the window while then PDF was still open.
To me there is a big difference between choosing to close the window (manually), and the window being closed by the OS (because of a shutdown/restart).
Any chance we can split the Preference 'Restore last session' into 'Restore when PDFXE closed manually' & 'Restore when PDFXE closed automatically'. Or perhaps just add another option that says 'Close all documents when PDFXE closed manually'.

Hi ddk,

Thanks for the post - We'll pass this along for consideration but can make no promises at this time.

For now, an easy solution would be to press Ctrl + W to close the document, before closing the Editor.

Cheers,

I'm finding the lack of this feature to be a huge frustration. I work with a lot of pdf's open simultaneously, and in the past, it seems to me, PDF-X would handle this when Windows forced an update. Since a couple of years ago, it hasn't, and I lose a lot of my workflow as a result. Turning on Restore Last Session doesn't help. I do it, and then a couple of months later Windows forces an update and I find that the box has been unchecked by the system (for some unknown reason).

I use Chrome and Word as my other main tools, and they both handle Windows updates faultlessly, allowing you to restart where you were. Please implement something to achieve the same in PDF-X (or re-implement it, if it was removed for some reason).

Hello, piersmessum

If the software is closed unexpectedly (Aka "automatically" or "improperly", IE, force closed by windows or a crash), we can only recover the information of files which have had changes made to them. This is controlled by the "autorecover" function in our preferences. Any files which are open and have been properly saved or have not seen any changes made to them are not included in our temporary files which in turn means that they cannot be re-opened automatically, or with a single click.

The limitus here is that our preferences, including the restore session file lists, are kept in your current user registry, to ensure that your settings are only yours, and are not shared among other users on the device. When any application closes unexpectedly, it cannot write its "closing information" to the registry as it does so. For this reason, we will not be able to offer a separate feature for this without a hefty overhaul to how we handle our preferences. Unless we see some very large demand, it is highly unlikely that this will be seeing an implementation anytime in the near future.

The best I can suggest is that you do get in the habit of manually closing the software, as you should with any apps to ensure an expedient startup process and application healthy files.
