Full screen text selection and browsing

Post by Yardley »

PDF-XChange Editor 8.0.338.0
Windows 10 64-bit 1909

It is either not possible or significantly counter-intuitive to highlight text while in full screen mode.

In full screen mode, right click behaves erratically, sometimes invoking the menu and sometimes behaving as page up/down. Even after the right click menu is successfully invoked and the tool type changed from 'grab' to 'text select' text selection is not possible. Left click continues to grab the page or unexpectedly page up/down.

Also, it would be nice if the default behavior for switching between windowed and full screen kept the page layout the same. For example, when a tablet user of any of the major PDF viewers/ebook readers taps the center of the page the menus disappear but the page stays the same. Switching from windowed to full screen in PDF-XChange effectively does the same thing for a desktop user but in this case the page layout unexpectedly changes.

Hi, Yardley

FullScreen mode is intended as a Viewing mode, not an Editing mode, which is why some functions are different. If you do intend to use this view mode while editing, know that it is not intended for that purpose and may not be ideal. This is also why the default display mode is not synchronized between the two. A better alternative would be to collapse the ribbon when the Editor window is Maximized, this is done by simply double clicking on any tab name.

As for how to make Fullscreen work a bit better for you, Anytime that a tool is not selected, a version of the "hand" tool is in use, left clicking with this tool will go forward in the document, while right clicking will go backwards in the document, Right clicking in areas where there is selectable content present, such as comments and the like, will prompt the context menu to open for that content item.

To select most tools, you will need to setup Shortcuts to activate the tool, This article details how to setup custom tools and assign shortcuts for them: https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowle ... nge-Editor

I agree that the "Default Page Layout" setting for Full Screen Mode should inherit this setting from the normal (editing-) mode. Or, there must be a separate setting for full screen mode. For example, in full screen mode, I most often need the "Continuous" mode. However, the Default Page Layout for full screen mode is "Single Page" and this cannot be changed.

In addition, if there are no editing functions for full screen mode, why are they displayed in the RMB context menu (for the menu to appear, you need to press the right mouse button, move the cursor a little, and release the button)?

Hello, Jensen Head

Thank you for the added support, I cannot promise that this will have a large impact on the chances of this changing sooner, I cannot understate the power of more voices being added.

As for your additional note, What I said is that the mode is not INTENDED for the use of these tools, and using many of them could pose problematic while in fullscreen mode. I even went so far as to provide a link to topic on how to bind custom tools to a shortcut, and clarified that you can access them in fullscreen mode by using those hotkeys. So I am not sure how you came to the conclusion I said it was not possible. It is not intended, and using editing features in this mode may not always work as desired, that is the only message I conveyed.

At the moment, we do not have any plans to change the fullscreen mode to handle editing tools in the near future, but I cannot say it will not come later on.
