Default Preset on quick launch button press

Post by fletch »

The quick launch buttons are tiny enough as is, making the drop down part even more difficult to 'hit'.

I wish I could define the preset that is chosen/loaded when I click the button itself. Saving me the step of selecting it from the dialog drop down every time.

Hi, fletch

To clarify, you mean these buttons, yes?

If so, this menu will remember the last selected item for the main "button". If for example, I were to not click the dropdown, but instead click on the button itself, it would instantly launch Adobe and open the current file within it (a feature I use almost daily as part of our support team).

Ah, my apologies. Looking back at my post, I was SUPER vague about what buttons I was talking about.

Maybe this one could be changed to work in the same was as the one you referenced. Using the last choice. Of course everyone currently used to the dialog appearing under the current behavior might be inconvenienced.

Maybe a compromise would be displaying the dialog, but remembering in the drop down on that dialog which choice I used last.

Another alternate is to remove the dropdown indicator on the buttton and clicking the button itself fires the dropdown. The button is easier to "aim" for than the tiny dropdown indicator.

Hi, fletch

Thank you for clarifying. The dialog in question should remember the last used option there as well, so when you click it, by default it would open with the last used settings all still in place. You can also specifically choose these exact same presets from the "scanner settings" dropdown in the dialog that appears.

I hope this helps!

Ok, seems it does remember the Parameters. However, since it does not display the matching dropdown entry shown below, it's confusing. Especially if you have created a certain set of parameters, then saved them in a SINGLE name you could easily recognize. Each time you click the button, you think it's always using "custom" scanner settings and not the one you created named Books.

As a result, if you have more than one custom setting and can't remember the one you used last time, you have to train yourself to recognize the individual parameters rather than recognizing the name you gave the custom setting - WHEN scanning in this matter, clicking the button, not the dropdown.
image.png
Clearly the quicker method is clicking the dropdown and choosing the custom setting by name. But on a 4k screen, where the button is already tiny, that dropdown part is even tinier. So it becomes tedious if you're scanning allot of documents.

Hi, fletch

Thank you for the feedback on the Scan UI window, I will mention this to the team and see what can be done. Though I am not sure if it is possible to record this due to the volatile nature of the "presets" files which are used for these.

If you are finding that items are too small on a 4k monitor, perhaps you should try enabling our scaling function, so the editor resizes to an appropriate size for your use. you can find this option in the Preferences, under general. Simply enable "system scale" and then restart the Editor.

1 & 3 are the same. I've been using 1 - which I'm grateful for because some legacy apps look like 2 and give me no control.

1 - No Scale (system DPI)
2 - No Scale (normal DPI)
3 - System Scale

Also, to be completely clear, the current behavior is that this dialog remembers the prior selection from #2 but not from #1. That is, when you press the quick launch button, in #1 it does not display the setting profile that matches the values in #2 - unless of course you choose something from #1. Each time this dialog is displayed, the dropdown (#1) always displays "Scanner Settings <Custom>", regardless of the last setting used.

So you just have to KNOW that it remembers your last setting/parameters but it does not show the NAME of the setting that matches those parameters in #1. Which is why you name the settings to begin with so you don't have to scan through the different parameters to see if you're using the right one.

In any event, that behavior is documented now. But don't change the behavior just on my behalf. It turns out I can't use the scan directly into PDF-X because the deskew doesn't work as well as the 'straighten' setting in the HP Scan app.

Hi, fletch

Clicked the wrong button, sorry if you received two notifications about my posting.
So is it safe to assume that you are okay with the scaling functions currently in place? Your first post is a bit vague in that regard.

As for the scanner UI, yes, you understand that correctly, the actual options will be remembered, but not the "preset". I also wanted to note, the issues you are having with deskew could be becuase it is enabled in both the scanner and our software, it may be a good idea to try disabling it in our software (from the image insertion options) if your scanner is already capable. Alternatively, you could also enable the "show native UI" option to directly use the scanners driver UI instead of ours to modify the scan settings.

No problem, and that explains the double notifications. I wondered about that - was looking for TWO posts here :D

Yeah, scaling is OK. They have done an adequate job in offering the existing scaling which helps ALLOT with the program overall. Those quick launch buttons are just naturally that size in relation to the others. It's pretty common. One change I suggested would not be fair to those who already understand how that button works. I just need to practice a little and I'll get used to it.

Good points about things to try regarding Deskew. When PDF-X talks to the HP Twain driver only the progress bar from the HP UI appears as it's scanning, then the results are handed back to PDF-X. So I don't really have any way to know what settings from HP are being applied. Seemingly none because I remember most pages were crooked. Then when I found deskew in PDF-X it fixed that. Then I later found out that pages that didn't have a good vertical reference for the logic to use as a gauge didn't correct at all. But the HP Scan handled all of the pages. I'll try the native UI via PDF-X next, not tried it yet.

I'm getting a new dedicated Epson scanner soon (not an all-in-one) so that will give me even more opportunities to try :)
