Bates "number of digits"

Post by Nemo »

I like to use Bates numbers as page numbers because you can then get them to appear in a Table of Contents.

You can specify "number of digits" for Bates numbers but it won't honour any number less than 3 - i.e. you can enter 2 but the Bates numbers will still be three digits.

Could this be changed to honour a "number of digits" of 2 or a "number of digits" of 1, as ideally I don't want leading zeroes on page numbers.

Hi, Nemo

I do need to ask here, If you do not need leading zeroes, why not simply use the "page number" as a header, instead of Bates numbering specifically?

Hi Daniel

In order to avoid any confusion about different types of page number, let me first define each of them. There are actually four types of page number (if we include bates numbers) as follows:

1. PDF physical page number or "original page number" (i.e. the fourth page is a PDF is physical page number 4)
2. PDF logical page number or "page label" - using Organise - Number Pages you can set logical page number which can be different to physical page numbers. If you do this then at the bottom of the pane the logical number appears first and the physical number afterwards.
3. Imprinted page number - using Organise - Header and Footer you can add a page number to a header or footer (or both) using the %[Page] macro.
4. Imprinted Bates number - using Organise - Bates Numbering you can add a Bates number to a header or footer (or both) using the %[Bates] macro.

Now if you select Bookmarks - Build Table of Contents, there are three options for "Output Page numbers" which correspond to 1, 2, and 4 above. No 3 is not an option. If it were I would use it but as it is not I use 4 instead.

Hi, Nemo

Understood, I see where you are coming from now, the character limit on bates numbering could be an issue here for sure. I will forward this feedback to the Dev team for consideration. I cannot speak for what will be done at the moment, but I can promise it will be considered.

Hi Daniel,

I can see that having a minimum number of digits makes it more Bates-like (like the old physical stamps).

Of course if Bookmarks -Build Table of Contents allowed for option 3 then I wouldn't need to consider using Bates in the TOC and wouldn't be asking that it be made more like an ordinary page number!

Hi, Nemo

Indeed, I have included a link to this article in the official feature request, so the Dev team can review the whole conversation as they are considering what should be done. Like I said before, I cannot be certain how exactly it will be implemented at the moment.
