Text Box - Transparent Background?

Post by shade-cabin-hammock »

Hi,

Is it possible to create a text box with a transparent background? I know I can add text with the Add Text tool, and that achieves the same effect. But, I've got a few specific text sizes / colors that I need and it would be good to be able just to have that in the toolbar styled up via a text box BUT...WITH a transparent background, as the text boxes opaque background covers the surrounding text enough to cause confusion.

Possible?

Alternatively, is there any way to define a few UNIQUE Add Text tools?

Sincerely,

SCH

Hi SCH,

indeed a text box can have it's fill set to "none" and het that effect:

Also - regards this:

Have you played with the Styles Pallet yet?

There certainly is. The "Properties Pane" is your friend here:
BoldTextInABox.gif
Or the "Format" ribbon that dynamically appears when appropriate:
BoldTextInABox2.gif
I hope that helps.

Hi Paul,

Ah! I follow. Seems like that's for selected instances of text? Is there any way to define it to use bold always?

Hi Dimitar,

Ah! I follow the logic - activate the text box, write, select the text, bold it, set as default

But, for some reason...the successive text boxes don't have the bold.

What do you think is happening?

Hmmm - are you absolutely 100% certain that the text was selected at the time you set "Make Default"?

I ask because objects like a text box have two levels of properties. If you select a text box you can modify the box properties,
image1.png
if you select the text it shows an entirely different set of properties.
image.png
If you clicked outside that text before hitting "make default" it would not set the text properties but the box properties which I assume you didn't change.

That's the only thing that comes to my mind for this. I just tested it and it is working as expected. (you could do to update from 359 to 361, but this isn't related to that.)

There is a "Make Default" for both.

Hi Paul,

Amazingly it only occurs with...fonts based on HANDWRITING! As of COURSE I do use! :D

All OTHER font, the bold holds. But, with any font based on handwriting, no. Please see attached.

Hello, shade-cabin-hammock

In order for a font to be retained as "bold" it must have its own "bold face" font style. As an example, Arial, and Times New Roman both offer bold font faces, but "Algerian" does not. (I am using windows default fonts in this example so that anyone reading this can take a look following the next steps I will write).

In order to ensure that the font you are using offers a bold face, open the windows start menu, and search for "Font settings":

The following window will open:
image1.png
If you search for Arial, as I have in the image above, and then click on the Arial font (which you can see has 9 font faces available), you will be presented with this menu:
image2.png
Most important is the outlined section, where i have selected the "bold" font face as an example, the existence of this means that a Bold version of the font exists, and thus can be properly used by applications, without any "simulation" required.
Looking at another font, Algerian, as per my example above, you will see that there are no extra font faces, and thus, no "bold" font option either.
image3.png
This in turn means that there is not a "bold" font for us to save as the default, and so the original font itself is selected.

If you look up the fonts your are having trouble with in this window, you will likely find that they also do not have a bold face available to windows.

Unfortunately at the moment, it is not possible to save the "bold" flag for fonts which do not themselves have a bold face option which we can use.

Kind regards,
