Bug: Text letters are only partially condensend when entering text

Post by clsven »

Occasionally (not always) I face a certain problem when I enter text into an existing text box.

When I enter new text into such a textbox the chars are automatically showed PARTIALLY (!) condensed
I am NOT talking about resizing the text box. I just write into an existing text box of fixed size.

And - very strange - all the entered letters are NOT condensed evenly. Some portions are condensed while others remain in "normal" size.

Have a look at the attached snapshot:

I think this is a bug.

If this is NOT a bug: How can I ALWAYS AUTOMATICALLY force XChange Editor to use for all letters the normal size?

I suppose that these textboxes are using an embedded sub-set of a specific font that is not available by default in Windows itself.
If that is the case, you will see that it are always the same characters that are causing a problem in a given textbox.
Look into the Text Editing Tools / Format-ribbon to see which font that is.
You can also look into the menu File > Document Properties > Fonts to verify if the document includes one or more embedded fonts.

Please try to modify the type of font for one of the problematic textboxes into a Windows default font like "Arial" for example. Then try again.

Kind regards.

Thanks Willy,

that's a great explanation and request. I am keen to hear how that works out.
Best regards

Sorry, this is wrong.

The text is already ARIAL

Have a look at the attached snapshot

Any other ideas?

To be 100% sure about the font, you must select at least one character of the text that shows like condensed.

In case it really goes about the font "Arial", can you please post an example PDF that shows the problem?
So, the people of Tracker Support will be able to investigate.

Thanks for the tip, Willy.

Yes, an example file will definitely be useful.

And here is a sample pdf page for this problem.

Due to privacy reasons I had to delete almost all unnecessary stuff.

But the remaining parts show the problem.

Scroll down on the pdf page to the textbox, switch to "Edit" mode and enter/change some text.
It will be unevenly condensed although its Arial.

Why?

Hello, clsven

Thank you for the sample, This does appear to be a case of the embedded font contaning an error:
image.png
As you can see, if we open the "font" dropdown, there are two arial entries, one is the embedded version that is currently in use, and the other is the system version:
image(1).png
As such, to resolve this issue, I would recommend that you use our "replace fonts" function, located on the Convert tab. Ensure you have the text selected (the text should be highlighted showing selection, like in my screenshots). Then you can open the replace fonts function and click "add from selection":
image(1)(1).png
This will result in the current, damaged version of the Arial font being set as a font to be replaced. Following that, choose the windows default Arial font version as the "replacement font name":
image(1)(1)(1).png
After that one change, click ok, and allow the document to be processed:

Kind regards,

Hello Daniel,

thank you for your comments and suggestions although they seem to me wrong.

First of all: From my point of view the Arial font should be the Arial font.
No matter whether it is embedded in PDF document or derived from system.
So chars in both Arial sources must be the same.

If this is not the case XChange Editor should popup a warning "Font differences found: Arial - Replace embedded font by system font YES/NO?"

Secondly, If I delete the problematic text in textbox completely and enter a new text sentence then ALL chars should be taken only from ONE and the SAME source.
When typing chars then XChange Editor should not arbitrarily switch after lets say 5th char from Arial (embedded) to Arial (system).

All typed chars should be either condensed or not condensed but not mixed.

I (as a normal user) don't want to fiddle around with replace font function.

I just want to enter text where all chars are from the same style.
Xchange Editor should (MUST) be able to handle this automatically.

Can you re-check this?

Hello, clsven

I am afraid that is simply not how embedded fonts work. If a font is embedded, it will be used by the editor. There can be 16 different versions of the same font embedded into a document, all incomplete, but collectively properly filling the font.
Beyond that, font embedding also embeds the associated glyph data, and in some cases they glyphs are assigned incorrectly, meaning forcibly changing them can make the document worse. imagine if the word "dog" turned into "ABC" and every instance of each letter in the word dog through the document was changed to A, B or C respectively? This can and does happen with some frequency, and there is no way to automatically identify if that is going to happen. This is why changing fonts is a task you need to perform manually, and is not something we will automatically check or suggest changes on.
