How can I see the names of all files saved in a session?

Post by Raineer »

I've changed the place of some files so now when I go to a saved session, it can't open any of my pdf files. So what I wanted to do was write down the names of all and then make a new session and save it. But the problem is I'm unable to scroll down to see the names of all files. In other words, when hover the mouse over the name of a session, it shows me the names of the top 7-8 files but to read the rest I have to be able to move the little scrollbar on the right side of the file names. But I'm unable to do that. as soon as I click on it, it disappears. I tried using the mouse wheel and other ways but seem unable to move that scrollbar. Is there any other ways to go about this? Thank you.

I have tried to reproduce the problem by saving a session with multiple pdf-files and then moving some of them to another folder, but the scroll bar in the overview keeps working and the names of the missing files are still in the list. After clicking (to open the session), I only get error messages for the files that are missing.

So, I wonder, does the problem still occur after restarting PDF-XChange Editor, or even after restarting your computer ?
Are you working with the latest build of PDF-XChange Editor, i.e. build 366 (see via Help > About).

To find information about existing sessions, you can look into Windows Registry, at the following location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Tracker Software\PDFXEditor\3.0\Settings\CustomSessions\Items\000000\Data\Docs

For each session there is a different sequence number, like here above "000000".
When you click on that sequence number (key), you will see the sessions-name in the column at the right.
Below "Docs", you will see a sequence number per pdf. Clicking on that sequence number, you will see the location and the name of the corresponding pdf.

I hope this will already help you further.

Maybe the people of Tracker Support already have experience with this kind of problem ?

Kind regards.

@Tracker Support
A question for myself: When clicking File > Sessions, I still see the "Last Used Session", even after all sessions have been removed and the "Manage Sessions List" is empty, and PDF-XChange Editor has been restarted. Is this intentionally ? Myself, I would like to see all sessions-information to be removed. I had to remove the following key in Windows Registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Tracker Software\PDFXEditor\3.0\Settings\CustomSessions

Hello Willy Van Nuffel,

Thanks for your comments on Raineer's post. I am also unable to reproduce what he says, so maybe he is using an older build.
@Raineer - please ensure you are at build 366, and if the issue is still there - do let us know!

As for your comment towards us regarding that "ghost" session, even when you have deleted all of your custom sessions, if you open a file and then close the Editor before closing that file - this will be saved as a session that you can then see in the sessions list.
If you close all files and then close an empty Editor- the "Last session" should also be empty the next time you start the Editor.

Kind regards,
Stefan

Thanks for your answer @Stefan.

The "Last session"-information in my PDF-XChange Editor application was indeed removed the next time it was started.
So, this feature is working for me like it is intended, in the current build 366.

Let us also hope for good news from Raineer.

Kind regards.

Hi, thank you for your quick and helpful reply!
Just want to say no, I don't have the latest version. Mine is the build 361.0 portable.
And unfortunately the problem remains even after restarting the program and my computer.

Thanks for your reply @Raineer.

1) Can you please try with the most recent "portable version" (build 366) of PDF-XChange Editor, available here:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product/pdf-xchange-editor

2) If you still have the same problem when using the newest portable version, then I am afraid that the session information has become damaged. I hope you will be able to take the needed information out of the Windows Registry and make that session at new.

Regards.

Hello!

Willy is correct to suggest the update, you wont see any improvements if you are running an old build, as we never release patches or updates for previous versions, all fixes and new improvements are only offered in the current latest release.

As for willy's second point, that should not actually be a concern, the portable does not store this data in the registry, is keeps it in an internal data file which is contained within the portable folder. If you are downloading a new version of the portable and creating a new folder for it, this information would not be carried over.

Thank you both.

I will download the new version.

Just one question for future: Is there a way to download the information from a session? Like the list of pdf files associated with a session?

Hello Raineer,

No - I am afraid that it's not currently possible to extract a list of files from a session.

Kind regards,
Stefan

Okay thanks. Just want to say that though I was never able to extract info from those sessions, the issue was resolved after installing the latest software, meaning that I'm able to move the scrollbar for each session.
Thank you for your prompt and helpful replies.
