Re: session error suggestion
Hello, MedBooster
I don't think the dev team will approve this suggestion, as it would mean users could try to do something and then nothing at all would happen, without explanation later on. While this could be helpful for daily users, it would be very confusing for those who go a few weeks/months at a time between using this feature, or like me, have fading memory and tend to forget that they enabled such an option in the first place.
I will still pass the suggestion on to see what they think, but I expect that for the reasons above it will be rejected immediately.
Kind regards,

Re: session error suggestion
alright. Would just be useful to not have to click no on 10+ dialogues for files that are not found.

Re: session error suggestion
Hello MedBooster,
We do see your point as well - but as Dan pointed out - we will have to see what is best for the majority of users and those who do not use the feature daily. Dan is checking with the devs on this one, and will let you know when any decision is taken on this.
Kind regards,
Stefan

Re: session error suggestion
Hello,
Looking at this question, I wonder what should be the difference between answering "No" or "Yes", because in either of the two cases, the non-missing files are always opened (PDF-XChange Editor, build 366).
At my opinion, when clicking "No", PDF-XChange Editor should just stop and open no documents at all.

Re: session error suggestion
HI Willy,
I tend to agree, however when I tested this I do not get any message after deleting a file in my session, So I have 3 files int he sessions, I deleted one, I do not get any warning on opening the session that one of three files is missing. That seems to be the opposite of what you report!
We will have a chat about this here once the dev team is on deck later today.

Re: session error suggestion
Not 100% sure, but to me it seems like there are no error messages when opening a session from a file.

Re: session error suggestion
If there are files missing from a profile when you load it then there should be a warning to that effect I am told.
We will dig a little deeper here.

Re: session error suggestion
The devs have reproduced the issue where one is not prompted when loading a session file with missing documents.
We will fix this for the next build. The ticket is RT#6359: Editor failing to prompt when loading a session that references missing files.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Re: session error suggestion
1) Thanks for making a ticket for the lack of an error message when files are missing when opening them "from a session file".
2) Do you still expect an answer to my question/proposition about the "No"-choice in the "Open Session" dialog-box ?
Does the development team agree to cancel the whole of the session when one or more files are missing ?
3) An additional suggestion about the error message in the dialog-box :
Instead of "An error occurred while opening a document from the file:"
"An error occurred while opening the following document from the session:"
Kind regards.
Willy

Re: session error suggestion
Hello Willy Van Nuffel,
I see the discussion Paul had with our devs - and I can't see the question about the "No" option discussed.
However I see that he also made the Feature Request ticket to add the search:
#6360: Feature Request :: Editor :: Add Browse button to the FileIsMissed error-dialog, when session is opening
I will join that discussion with the devs now, and ask them about the No button and make the suggstion to update the message as per your third point.
Kind regards,
Stefan

Re: session error suggestion
Hi Guys.
And please do not forget about another moment - the file might exist but can be broken or password-protected(you may lose the passw), or you haven't permission to open that file, etc. So even file exists - you still might be unable to open it. And you cannot predict it before attempting to open it...
Cheers.

At the moment, when we open the session - we don't check the existence of each session's document before opening them all. We just open them one by one in a certain order, saved in the session. Reason for it - the session may contain documents from clouds too and to just check the existence of such docs - sometimes the full authentification procedure must be performed. And it may look quite strange if the Editor will first log in to all necessary clouds (there can be several different clouds used in one session), to verify the existence of files, and then will tell you that one file doesn't exist. And in this case, if you prefer to click the 'No' button, then what was the point to log in to the rest of the clouds?Willy Van Nuffel wrote:Looking at this question, I wonder what should be the difference between answering "No" or "Yes", because in either of the two cases, the non-missing files are always opened (PDF-XChange Editor, build 366).

Re: session error suggestion
Thanks for the explanation @Vasyl.
But still, at this moment, I do not see any difference in behavior nor result, after clicking "Yes" or clicking "No" answering the question "Do you want to continue ?". I suppose "continue" means continue with the next document, not continue trying to open the document that causes the error.
So, what is then the reason for that "No"-button ?
Thanks again.

Re: session error suggestion
Literally it means:
Do you want to continue opening the 'problematic' session?
[Yes] - to skip the problematic doc and try to open the next doc specified in the session
[No] - to stop completely the session opening process. But all successfully opened docs from this session will remain.
Do you see the other behavior for the [No] ?

Re: session error suggestion
Sorry to say @Vasyl, I tested profoundly and I see no difference.
This is my testing procedure (with PDF-XChange Editor, version 9.5, build 366):
- create and save five documents, named from "Document1" to "Document5"
- close these documents
- close PDF-XChange Editor
- open PDF-XChange Editor
- open the five documents, one by one (not selecting all five and open), beginning with "Document1" and ending with "Document5"
- save this as a session via "Save Current Session"
- close the documents
- close PDF-XChange Editor
- delete "Document3"
- open PDF-XChange Editor
- open the session
>> this gives an error message for "Document3"
- click "No"
>> Result : four documents are open : "Document1", "Document2", "Document4", "Document5", where you should only expect "Document1" and "Document2".
Can you please verify if you see the same behavior at your side ?
Kind regards.
Willy

Re: session error suggestion
Thanks for the pretty clear test. We reproduced the same wrong behavior. And it is reproducible only with that option enabled:
We will fix all such issues in the next build. Thanks again for the help.
And cannot be reproduced with "Just open documents from the session ..." option enabled. We will fix all such issues in the next build. Thanks again for the help.

Re: session error suggestion
Thanks @Vasyl
It is good to know that the cause for this (wrong) behavior has been found.
So, currently, "Restore whole session ..." takes precedence over clicking "No" to stop opening additional documents from the session.
It is an option I was not aware of.
Finally, I did a test with the option "Just open documents from the session..." and indeed now only "Document1" and "Document2" are opened after clicking "No" in the dialog-box.
Regards.
