Open side panel only for one window

Post by space_voyager »

I often view documents with multiple panes in the editor, such as a vertical split (see attachment). I am finding that the side panel with bookmarks, etc., is duplicated across these panes such that if I open the bookmarks side panel on the right side, it necessarily opens the bookmarks on the left side. Is it possible to decouple these so that the side panels are independent, and don't open simultaneously in all panes?

Hello, space_voyager

I am afraid not, this is because there are two types of panes available. The first is document panes (like bookmarks and thumbnail) which contain information specific to that particular file, and should not be confused by being positioned in a shared location that could lead to a misunderstanding. The second are application panes, these are items based on the active selection or tertiary items unrelated to the documents in question, such as the "properties" or "history" pane.

While you can "undock" any of the panes, it gets a bit confusing when you have two documents opened side by side:

Which of these two panes is which document? no easy way to tell. Likewise, if you combine them into a single entity, which is shown, the one related to the last document you... (Scrolled in? clicked inside of? Moused-over?) there is no reliable way to identify which of the two (or more) documents you have opened that should be the main focus of these panes if they were to be combined. And of course while you may have an answer to that, countless other clients would have a very different answer.

Kind regards,

Thanks for your reply! I meant simply that it seems like odd behavior for the bookmarks pane on the left side to open when a user opens the bookmarks pane on the right side. It seems pretty clear in this case that the left pane bookmarks are not the ones that the user wishes to see, and so should not open whenever the right pane bookmarks is opened.

In this case, the question is about document panes that should work independently in each window. So ...

- Click File > Preferences > General > (Tabs and Windows) Setup.
- You will arrive at the "Manage Tabs and Windows"-options.
- There, un-check "Synchronize the layout of document panes across all opened documents".
- Click OK and OK.

Kind regards.

Hello Willy Van Nuffel,

Thanks for this! Indeed the UI synchronisation turned off should help here! (and you beat me to posting the suggestion :D )

Kind regards,
Stefan
