Page Movement in Ribbon Layout and Two Pages Continuous mode

Post by rakunavi »

Hello all,

Not sure if this will be a bug report or a feature request, but I will report on the Previous Page / Next Page feature in the Ribbon Layout.

In Standard Layout and Two Pages Continuous mode, you can move pages backward or forward every two pages by pressing the < > button on the navigation toolbar at the bottom of the window. In Ribbon Layout and Two Pages Continuous mode, however, you have to press the < > button twice to move backward or forward between pages. It would be appreciated if it is possible to move every two pages by pressing a button once in Ribbon Layout as well as in Standard Layout.

The features mentioned above (cmd.view.goto.prevPage, cmd.view.goto.nextPage) are assigned the shortcut keys <Ctrl+Right> and <Ctrl+Left> by default, respectively. In Standard Layout, both of them work, but not in Ribbon Layout. Similarly, the <Shift+Space> and <Space> shortcut keys also work in Standard Layout, but not in Ribbon Layout. It would be appreciated if the same shortcut keys could be used regardless of the layout.

Attached is a verification video for your reference: after setting the two-page continuous mode, the first half of the video moves pages with the standard Layout and the second half with the Ribbon Layout.

Hello, rakunavi

The "two page" modes are not designed with the intent to be used in the Ribbon layout in any capacity, so while this does seem to be a bug I cannot promise that it will be fixed (or if it is, the fix may be removing the ability to activate two page modes when ribbon layout is active...) but I will forward this report to the Devs for consideration.

Hi Daniel, thank you for your comment.

I hardly see any reports about Ribbon Layout on this forum, and it seems that I am almost the only one, which is sad. As a user, I am watching with great interest to see if the various features of Ribbon Layout will be reduced as a result of your push to the development team, as you mentioned in your previous comment on another topic.
TrackerSupp-Daniel wrote: Thu Oct 06, 2022 11:22 pm Ribbon layout should only be used with a continuous mode viewing mode, and to be quite honest, I have been pushing to Dev team to enforce this by preventing the single- or double-page options from activating without disabling ribbon layout as well.
Incidentally, for people who are new to Ribbon Layout, I am sure they do not understand the advantage of distinguishing between Single Page and Two Pages in Contiuous mode & Ribbon Layout, so let me write this for thier reference.

"Single Page" is suitable for cases such as stapling a document printed on only one side of a copy paper. On the other hand, "Two Pages" is suitable for cases such as books, which are printed on both sides and have the concept of left and right pages. (I am just writing about the very obvious.)

In the former case, page moving should be done in single-page unit, and in the latter case, page moving should be done in two-page units. If the latter case is done in single-page unit, the author's intention may not be conveyed correctly to the reader. In addition, the left page and the right page are displayed interchangeably, which significantly reduces viewability. Ribbon Layout is nothing special, and the exact same concept is applied to it as Standard Layout.

Whether more users will become proficient with the Ribbon Layout first, or whether your suggestion to reduce the features will bear fruit first, the outcome might seem obvious, but I would like to remain hopeful, even if only slightly. Developers have many other priorities, and more reports on Ribbon Layout may increase the likelihood that requests for feature reductions will be granted. I will keep quiet for the time being.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Hello, rakunavi

No worries, I did still bring this to the team for consideration, thankfully they are not of the mind that it should be removed as a possibility, but it is, as suspected, not a priority to change the handling on at the moment. Perhaps in the future, you will see this resolved, but for now, the current "two press" functionality will remain for two page continuous mode while in ribbon page layout.
