Toolbar customization: How to find commands?

Post by clsven »

I am currently trying to customize the toolbar(s).

When I open the "Customize Toolbar" dialog with tab "Commands" all the available commands are spread over many categories.

How can I find e.g. "Find Next" toolbar command?

When I mark "All commands" and enter in find entry field "Find next" then only "Go to next entry" is listed which seems not to be what I am searching.

Furthermore it has no associated toolbar icon.

Moreover I have seen somewhere in past a search entry field in directly in toolbar.
Which command do I have to drag to toolbar to get it visible?

Next question:
When I hover over an existing toolbar icon I can see its name. But I cannot see the category which contains the command.
How can I show it? Can you add the category in hover text tooltip?

Last question:
One of my (sub) toolbars visible on the toolbar bar contains 3 icons on the left and then a lot of space on the right (before the next sub toolbar starts.

How can I shrink/shorten so sub toolbar so that it needs only the space for the 3 icons?
The usual delimiter drag does not work.
Yes, all toolbars are unlocked.

Thank you
Claudia

Hello Claudia,

Some menu items are indeed not too obvious and might use a name slightly different than what you expect - however "Go to Next Enrty" is exactly the command you are looking for;

The default shortcut for it is F3 - and it does exactly the same as this button if pressed with the mouse:

The text tooltips are intended for the everyday use - so showing the command category is not something I can see being added to the tooltips. You can always search for "All" commands - and then there would usually be only a handful of entries to go through and only in 2-3 categories max.

For your last question - can we have a screenshot of the toolbar in question?

Kind regards,
Stefan

Hello Stefan,
thank you for the partial answers.
I miss an solution on how to assign a toolbar icon to "Go to next entry" command.

Currently there is a mixture between icons and text labels.
Have a look at the attached snapshot.
This is absolutely ugly.
I want to have icons only.
In Xchange-Viewer there was a dedicated icon for "Find next" .
Can you embed a similar one in XChange Editor?

Furthermore a question was unanswered:
How do I put a search entry field into toolbar?
I mean the search field with "Something" text in your posting.
It exists in XChange Viewer too. But I cannot find the corresponding command in XChange Editor.

For the last question see attached snapshot as well.

Hello, clsven

It is not possible to manually assign icons to toolbar items, but I will forward this suggestion to our Dev team so that they can consider adding one for the "next find result" command. The reason that this does not have an icon is because the only way to "find" text where this button would be usable, is by opening the find dialog (Ctrl_F), so there should be no reason to add it to your toolbars directly.

At the moment, you cannot do so, the Find text entry field is only available within the "Find" modal window.

As for the question hidden in your screenshot, you can move any item on the toolbars by simply dragging them while the "customize UI" window is opened:
