File attachment tool [Question]

Post by MedBooster »

When you create an "attachment file" it is saved to PDFXEdit in the path C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Temp

Does this mean it is separate from the original file? Meaning that if you change the original file, the file in the "file attachment tool" will not match the changes? From what I've seen and tested it seems they become two separate files, changing the original file did not change the one "attached" PDF linked to the paper clip icon (vice versa? – not sure about that)

Hi, MedBooster

I do not see the temp file you mention and I would never recommend assuming changes made outside the document should be reflected in the document. As I understand it the file does go in the PDF itself and that temp file you are looking at is not something that you should expect to be able to reliably work with.

What is the objective here may I ask?

Kind regards,

The objective is to understand what the file attachment tool actually does..
Isn't to create a link for an embedded file the same as the "file attachment" tool?

Or can you embed a file without there being a link?
Or have a link without there being an embedded file?

edit:
I got an answer to the previously asked questions here

Hi, MedBooster

I actually believe these are two different ways of referring to the same thing, though I need confirmation from the devs. When you "embed" a file what do you do? I expect it to appear in the Attachments pane. From my understanding Attaching = Embedding.

I will get confirmation and let you know.

I join the question. Were there any clarifications?

Hello, Jensen Head

Yes, The "Attach file" comment tool is identical to opening the "attachments pane" and manually dragging a file inside. Both forms of "attachment" embed the target file into the PDF - there is no external reference.

The only difference between these tools is that the "attach file" comment tool places a visible object on the page immediately during the embedding step, while use of the attachments pane would require you to manually create a link/bookmark/etc. which points to the embedded file.
