A4 versus United States Letter (8.5 x 11 inches)

Post by CharlieMC »

It's really unfortunate that there's no SIMPLE WAY to change the paper DEFAULT to the U.S. version.

As IT Manager for our non-profit festival foundation, I was so excited about using this application! (And as the Webmaster, I was anxious to make this reader the one people visiting our site were using, too.)

I spent two days putting PDF-XChange Viewer on all the computers in our office -- and had also been coding it all over our (huge) website as our 'RECOMMENDED' download PDF reader (in place of Adobe Reader). But the printer issue has had me hammered by various staff -- who don't want to have to change the printer defaults for every document. (And frankly, there are many staff members not capable of making these changes without help -- and I don't have the time to do it for every PDF they're printing!)

I tried the following solution (recommended here):

This worked for me: In the Print dialog box, under Page Scaling, I checked "Choose paper source by PDF-page size". Now it shows the page as 8.5 by 11.00 inches and "Paper: Letter".

But it only appears to work for some documents -- not all.

I now need to QUICKLY code those web pages back to recommending Adobe Reader again (sigh) I simply can't be suggesting a software for American (U.S.) users that doesn't have a Letter size DEFAULT printing setting...

There are many aspects of this software application that I loved, but I'm in a rush situation with no choice but to change. (I guess in the future I should pay more attention to what country is the developer of an application. My bad.)

Probably it's needless-to-say, but the Staff has been giving me hell over this snafu...

Seriously, you've got a good software, especially for non-United States users. Good luck with it!

Best,

==(Ms.) Charlie

Wow. I guess I'm getting hammered for trying to be honest and share my feelings about the application.

Seriously, I never intended to offend -- I think the software is great. I only wish I could USE IT.

It's one of SEVERAL free applications I very quickly accessed during a three-hour hunt last Friday. I had initially selected another one, but this application comes so highly recommended in many circles that I was excited about using it.

I did NOT have the free time to check it over all that well, however. I had no clue about the printing 'issue' until I was being hammered ABOUT MY JOB in the workplace, by my co-workers. They rely on my judgment about these things, and felt I should have had ANSWERS and easy solutions for them, with no excuses. End of story.

I'd love to support this application with more than just recommendations, for example. But we're a very poor festival (non-profit), with a limited IT budget. And as we're clearly not going to be using this anyway, I don't know that it's necessary -- or is it? (Hey, I use a lot of Open Source and freeware in the office, because FREE is such a very good thing for organizations like this one...)

But, sure, I can take time out of my seven-day work week to respond. What the heck! It's true that I found time to download a free application that's well-supported via a forum. (Things I appreciate, believe me.)

In answer to the technical questions posed me, I have around 20+ computers, with a variety of OS (operating systems include Windows XP, Windows 2000 Pro and Windows 2000). There are five (I think) printers, most are HP office-quality lasers (but none are new), plus a Dell color printer (that's new-ish). I'm NOT the person in charge of printers, however, so I don't know the actual printer stats, I'm afraid. (Actually, as swamped as I am with other tasks, I'm glad not to manage those, to tell the truth.)

All this said, my turn-around as we head in season for our festival is a very short period of time. Considering I have no support (not even an intern) -- and I'm a volunteer (not a paid employee) -- I feel I'm doing the best I can to locate what people need to do their jobs.

I didn't need to post here -- and I'm now pretty sorry that I did. I thought maybe it would prove to be a helpful insight for the application creators. It wasn't meant to be snide or unfriendly or in any way unkind. I just wanted people to know why I was unhappily forced back to Adobe Reader (which I HATE, personally).

It's Sunday here -- and I have a big day of work facing me (after being at the office until past midnight last night -- and working on the website here at home until 4:30 a.m.). I've written this because I feel I owe it to anyone reading -- in case you continue to think ill of me for the initial post.

I'm not complaining about the hours I spend working. Last year was our festival's Centennial -- so I got used to 17 hour days, seven days a week. It's all cool. I love what I do -- even when I'm getting hammered by co-Staff. (heh)

Believe me, I wanted to use this application. I wish I still had the option, frankly. But people need what they need -- and they need it right now. That's the nature of the Special Events world I'm working in...

THANKS AGAIN for sharing your FREE software with everyone. And SINCERELY -- good luck with it in the future.

Charlie,

Check back in a few days and see if Build 35 is ready. The best is worth waiting for.

Got version 035, very nice.

I manage our lodge's membership directory and at times issue a "Directory_Update.pdf" file when information changes. What a pleasure to be able to click on an email address and bingo! the email program launches! :D

Happy campers here!
