Setting to hide program title from window caption
Minor annoyance: when you have multiple windows open, all windows have the text " - PDF-XChange Editor" in the taskbar, which can make it difficult to focus on the document name.
Other software like Visual Studio Code only show the file name which is helpful. You can show it by default like now, but please allow us to hide it if we need to.
Thanks

Re: Setting to hide program title from window caption
Hello 329,
I am afraid that the name of the application cannot be hidden. You should see the document name before the name of the application so it shouldn't be hard to differentiate them from one another.
If there is a way to hide the application name, this should a Windows tweak rather than something we should implement as I see the same behavior in other products e.g. MS Word, Excel, Edge.
Regards,
Radi

Could you please suggest it to the developers?

Hello 329,
This is a windows setting - so not something we can control from our end.
I believe this might allow you to disable it completely:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/win ... 8d07a3fb60
However this is not what you are after!
Kind regards,
Stefan

Re: Setting to hide program title from window caption
Hi, Stefan
It can be modified externally and I have a solution but it reverts too frequently to the original title.
Thank you.
Of course you can! I understand if you decline, but it is a basic thing for a program to control the caption of its window. Browsers show the title of the current page. File search programs show the search query. Your program shows the name of the current document. This is a windows setting - so not something we can control from our end

Hello 329,
I suspect that we might be speaking of different things.
Just to confirm - I am referring to this Program name shown above pop-ups of any program in the taskbar: If you are having something else in mind - can you please share a screenshot with us of the particular place you refer to?
Kind regards,
Stefan

Re: Setting to hide program title from window caption
The popup = the name in the taskbar = the window title itself at the top. All are identical and derive from the same source. The one I care about is the taskbar, which will change according to how PDFXEdit.exe names its window(s).
I hope I am clear.

Hello 329,
I always thought that this is controlled by windows, and all the applications I have do show their application name in there. You say that Visual Studio does it differently, so it might be per application setting. I will now check with our devs if that is the case.
Kind regards,
Stefan

Re: Setting to hide program title from window caption
Hello 329,
Turns out that this is indeed controlled by the application, and our devs told me that from next build (due for release in August) you would be able to apply the attached registry hack to control this option. Please note that this will not be available through the Editor UI, and if you e.g. wipe the registry when reinstalling the Editor you might need to reapply the below.
Kind regards,
Stefan

Thanks a lot, Stefan!
Can this be applied to the portable version?

Hello 329,
Not 100% sure yet - most likely it won't work as the Portable stores it's settings in a file, and not in the registry.
Kind regards,
Stefan

Re: Setting to hide program title from window caption
I am very happy I found this thread and registry mod. Wish the release would have this option in Preferences->General->Window Settings
Thanks for the help and OP persistence about the topic.
Edit: Did not help. Still visible in title bar and task bar. Is applied to the registry correctly.
Version 9.5 build 366

Re: Setting to hide program title from window caption
as I understand this it is not expected to work until the next build. You will need to wait for 10.1.0.380 I believe.Tracker Supp-Stefan wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2023 11:27 am ... our devs told me that from next build (due for release in August) you would be able to apply the attached registry hack to control this option....

Could be added as a setting in the GUI, it's nice.

Re: Setting to hide program title from window caption
Hello 329,
Sometimes the portable version would also check the registry - have you tried applying the reg key from above to a machine where you then use the portable version?
As stated before - we do not plan to add this to the UI - so if it does not work with the reg key applied for you - I am afraid it will not work in the portable version.
Kind regards,
Stefan

I did. It doesn't work.Tracker Supp-Stefan wrote: ↑Mon Dec 18, 2023 9:54 am have you tried applying the reg key from above to a machine where you then use the portable version?
You don't have to add it to the UI. Could you suggest to the developers a way to tell the program to check for (but not write to) registry keys (like a --check-reg command line option)? Hello 329,
I will mention it to them - however I can not make any promises.
May I ask if there is any particular reason why you are using our portable and not the stand alone installed Editor on your machine?
Kind regards,
Stefan
