I updated and would like to revert these UI changes, possible?

Post by Special »

So first thing I noticed was this new tool bar in the side bar, I don't like it so I removed it, unfortunately there is still a gap left, which is just wasting space, can I remove this gap even further?

Old with no gap:

New look with tools:

New look with hidden but still gap:

How can I remove this gap:

Also I noticed this new "Edit Text" button, it seems redundant to me and I would also like to remove it like how it was on my previous version, is this possible? If so how?

Old - no Edit Text button:

New - how to remove Edit Text button?:

You appear to have all your toolbars locked. So, you will first need to unlock the toolbars by right-clicking on an empty space in the toolbar and selecting the menu that appears. Then you can uncheck the 'Quick Tools' toolbar from the menu when you right-click on an empty toolbar space again.

Generally, the above operation is sufficient, but in your case, the 'Quick Tools' toolbar has been hidden in advance, so in that case, just unchecking it should not make the toolbar disappear. This is a bug I reported in the past in the following topic. So, you can remove it by clicking the |> in the middle of the 'Quick Tools' toolbar.

As for the Edit Text command, if the toolbar is locked, you need to unlock the toolbar first. Then, select the Customize toolbar, right-click on the command, and select Delete from the menu that appears. Since you have already customized the user interface, this should be easy.

However, with the 10.0.0.370 update, The 'Edit Content' tool has been split into two tools: an 'Edit Text' tool and 'Edit Objects' tool. Therefore, please note that if you remove the "Edit Text" command, you will not be able to easily access the equivalent of the "Edit Text Elements as Blocks" function that was previously available.

I hope this will help.

I have all these specific selection modes:

They all work great, and if you want to select everything in your path, just choose the one that says "All" (instead of edit content),

I'm curious...
Would "edit content" do something else than "All" currently does??

Thanks so much rakunavi! It never ceases to amaze me how customizable this thing is. Glad I was able to fix these minor issues I had.

And as mentioned by MedBooster, the old "Edit Text" and the now new "Edit Objects > Text", what are the differences exactly between the two? They seem to do the same thing or pretty darn close, I just with I was able to roll both buttons into one, and just use the dropdown arrow to choose to keep the bar less full of clutter.

Hello MedBooster and Special,

If you understand the difference between (A) editing text in blocks and (B) editing text separately for each individual object, you will naturally be able to answer various questions about the UI changes in Build 370. You will also understand why the UI was changed.

  • (A) When editing collectively, when text is added, the entire text is treated as a block (flow), so adding a character automatically causes a line feed in a way that affects the entire text block.
    (B) However, when edited individually, the line feed is only done on a per-object basis.
The following GIF animation was created to illustrate another topic, but as you can see when you open the contents pane, all text in the base content is handled independently line by line in the PDF file. The user has two needs: (A) to edit them together and (B) to edit them separately, and how to implement this in the user interface is a concern for UI development.

  • Animation.gif
Until build 368, by changing the "Edit Text Elements as Blocks" (ID:cmd.tool.editContent.editTextBlocks) setting under the "Edit Content" command group (ID:cmd.tool.editContent), you could choose between above (A) and (B). However, from the past posts on this forum, it is easy to imagine that the deeper the setting, the more difficult it was for users to understand, and this was a factor that increased the burden on support. Therefore, in versions up to build 368, the "Edit Text" (ID:cmd.tool.editContent.text) and "Edit Text Elements as Blocks" (ID:cmd.tool. editContent.editTextBlocks), which are enabled together, are now independent as a single command "Edit Text" (ID:cmd.tool.editText) from build 370.

MedBooster has placed the "Select Comments" command (ID:cmd.tool.editAnnots) under the "Edit Objects" command group (ID:cmd.tool.editContent) using the toolbar customization feature. Following that approach and placing "Edit Text" command (ID:cmd.tool.editText) under the "Edit Objects" command group (ID:cmd.tool.editContent) in build 370 and later, a user interface similar to that of build 368 can be realized.

However, it is not possible to achieve exactly the same functionality. This is because after build 370, both the "Edit Objects" command group (ID:cmd.tool.editContent) and "Edit Text" (ID:cmd.tool.editText) cannot be enabled simultaneously. Before build 368, "Edit Text Elements as Blocks" (ID:cmd.tool.editContent.editTextBlocks) was located under the "Edit Content" command group (ID:cmd.tool.editContent). Therefore, it was possible for both to be valid at the same time. Thus, until build368, it was possible to select all the base content and at the same time, for text elements, to select the entire text block by simply putting part of the text in the selection. However, since build370, such a selection is no longer possible.

Perhaps the developers decided in the process of improving the user interface that such a selection method was unnecessary because it was not needed by the users.

@Tracker Support
All the above comments are based on my own guesses. I would appreciate it if you could point out any errors in my understanding.

Hello, rakunavi

Your explanation is pretty well on point. The Function was split into two options because the old checkbox to enable "edit text as blocks" caused no end of headaches both for new users who accidentally toggled it, and for us on the support team needing to repeatedly explain this to everyone. Now it is separated to ensure that it is clear which you should be using to edit text.

The minor loss of functionality in the inability to use "all" content editing mode to select full sized blocks is considered by the dev team to be offset by the clarity of use these two tools offer. If you need to move a full sized block of text though, you can always use the edit text tool specifically.

I do also want to address medbooster and Special's question directly:
MedBooster wrote: Sun Aug 20, 2023 4:17 pm I'm curious...
Would "edit content" do something else than "All" currently does??
"Edit content" is the "tool" being used in this case. Choosing "All, text, images, etc" simply filters what it can interact with, but does not change the tool in use. This is an important distinction, as the "Edit Content" tool (with "text" filter enabled) is a wholly different tool from the "Edit text" tool.
The "filter" you select is retained for subsequent use, so if you choose "all" then you can simply click on edit content, (no need to use the dropdown) to re-enable the tool and access all content editing. If you wish to only edit images, you can change this to images, then again, as it is remembered, you can re-enable the edit content tool, and it will only be able to interact with images, until you change it to something else.
