The selection target of the base content changes depending on the drag direction, zoom ratio, etc.

Post by rakunavi »

Hello all,

Overview
  • When selecting base content shapes with object edit mode enabled, I found that the selection was not as intended because the selection changed depending on the direction of the mouse dragging operation and the zoom ratio during the selection. The sample file is commented for clarity, but the important parts are only the red, green, and blue rectangles drawn as the base content shapes.
Issue #1
  • First, using the red rectangle as an example, here are the results of dragging from outside the four corners of A to D horizontally and vertically: for A, the shape is selected when the mouse cursor is inside the rectangle both vertically and horizontally, but for B, C, and D, the shape is selected only when the mouse cursor overlaps just above each edge. It is strange that the selection changes depending on the direction of the drag operation. Verification shows that it is normal for corner A, but which corner is normal is case by case. However, in the case of a rectangle, the general rule seems to be that only one of the four corners is normal and the other three are wrong.

About the Verification File
  • Such a shape can be easily created by creating an unfilled rectangle in Word, for example, and outputting it to PDF using the built-in Word feature or the PDF-XChange Printer. If you dare to create a shape using only the PDF-XChange Editor functions, you can do so by following the steps below.

    1. Create a rectangular comment without fill.
    2. Flatten it.
    3. Open the contents pane and move the shape outside of the XForm.
    4. Delete below the XForm in the content pane.

A sample file created using this method with different thicknesses is attached for reference (red 4pt, green 1pt, blue 0.5pt).

Issue #2
  • The selection also changes depending on the line thickness and zoom ratio. This is probably affected by the resolution, Windows scaling, and other factors. Therefore, please understand that the following verification is just an example. In the video, I tested with 1024x768 resolution and 100% Windows scaling, but I have confirmed that the same results can be obtained with 1920x1080 resolution and 100% Windows scaling.

In the video, I set the PDF-XChange Editor zoom ratio to 46.86% and 74.65%, respectively, and attempted to select the green rectangle in the sample file. When the zoom ratio is 46.86%, dragging vertically from 2B or 2C selects the shape as soon as it passes directly over the top edge. However, when dragging horizontally, the shape is not selected even if it passes directly over the left or right edge. However, if you change the zoom ratio to 74.65%, the vertical and horizontal selection is reversed for 2B and 2C. For 2D, the horizontal direction can be selected.

One or more of the following three methods can improve the selection problems described in this report as Issue #2.

    • Increase the zoom ratio
    • Make the line thicker
    • Increase the resolution of the display
For example, the reason I set the rectangle thickness to 4pt in the very first red sample shown is so that as many people as possible can see the problem. Also, if you are using a 4K monitor, you probably will not see the problem described in Issue #2.
Conclusion
  • However, even if it is improved, as mentioned at this report as Issue #1, objects are selected only at the moment the mouse cursor passes directly over the edge of the image, and that in itself is still strange enough. Then add to that the problem of the selection changing depending on the zoom ratio, etc., as described in the latter part of this report, and I cannot help but report it.
Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you so much for your continued support.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Hello all,

An additional sample file is attached for reference. In the file shown at the beginning of this topic the other day, the base content could eventually be selected if it was selected so that it covered the entire base content. However, the sample file shown here differs in that it cannot be selected even if it is dragged to cover the entire content.

  • sample2.zip
Although I believe that the underlying cause behind this problem is the same, it may be helpful to have more than one file to solve the problem.

Best regards,
rakunavi
