Clicking the [V] button on the far right of the drop-down list may not close the list

Post by rakunavi »

Hello all,

I have discovered a curious behavior regarding the drop-down lists used throughout the PDF-XChange Editor settings.

Drop-down lists are used in various places in Windows, regardless of the OS or application, but the basic behavior is the same. In all of them, one click on the [V] button on the far right opens the list, and another click closes it. For your reference, a verification video is shown below.

  • Intro.gif
However, in PDF-XChange Editor, if you click once and then click again to close the list, the list may reopen after a momentary pretense of closing. In other words, you cannot close a listing simply by pressing the [V] button. In such a case, you can close the list by clicking anywhere other than the drop-down list. In the following, I report two cases, Case A and Case B. The behavior itself is the same in both cases, but they differ in the following points.

  1. PC environment
  2. Drop-down list location where the issue occurs
  3. Workaround

Case A

  • A-1. PC environment

Unlike Case B described below, the issue probably occurs in all PC environments.

A-2. Drop-down list location where the issue occurs

The most common type of drop-down list is the one with the gray and gold gear icon on the far left. For example, in the Preferences dialog, you can find it at the top of "Scanner Presets" and "Color Management". In recent updates, it has been added as a Settings drop-down list in the bottom left of the 'New Empty Document' dialog and 'Crop Pages' dialog. The same behavior can also be observed in the drop-down list of the color settings.

    Other examples include the following.

    • Macro icon in 'Add Header and Footer' Dialog Box
    • Macro icon in 'Add Bates Numbering' Dialog Box
    • Options button in Search pane
    A-3. Workaround

Unlike Case B described below, there should be no workaround. When I look at the drop-down lists in PDF-XChange Viewer, such as color settings, they all follow the general behavior of Windows, which to me seems to be the way it should be.

For your reference, a verification video is shown below.

    • CaseA.gif
Case B

  • B-1. PC environment

This case does not occur in all environments. Here, the issue occurs on three out of five physical machines. There seems to be no common characteristics of the PC environment in which the issue occurs. I have also confirmed that the issue also occurs on the English version of Windows on a VMware virtual machine. This is a test environment where the disk image is saved immediately after the OS is installed, and then only updates are applied, and no applications are installed (the saved disk image is restored after rebooting).

For the two machines where I could not confirm this issue, I disabled the 'Fade or slide menus into view' in the 'Performance Options' shown in the B-3 workaround, and then re-enabled it, and now the problem occurs! At first glance, it seems meaningless to disable and then re-enable a setting that was originally enabled, but this method caused the issue on both machines. Therefore, the issue may be reproducible in all PC environments.

B-2. Drop-down list location where the issue occurs

All drop-down lists except for the drop-down list corresponding to A-2 above.

    B-3. Workaround

Open Windows System Properties, and disable 'Fade or slide menus into view' in the 'Performance Options'. Incidentally, PDF-XChange Viewer and all other Windows applications will display the drop-down list without any issues even if this option is enabled.

Hoping that the above information will be of some help to you.
Thank you so much for your continued support.

This is follow-up information.

Although not a drop-down list, the menu in the upper left corner of the window (System menu) also behaves similarly to case A above. This one also behaves distinctly differently from other common Windows applications. Also, in my first post, I included things in the drop-down list that should not be called a drop-down list, but please put the strict definition aside for the moment.

Hello, rakunavi

Thank you for the details, I have passed this along to the dev team for review. I expect this to be a low priority item when it begins however, so it may be some time before you see a change here.

Kind regards,

=== UPDATE ===================================================================
The issue reported below has been resolved in Ver 10.3.1 build 387.
I appreciate all the hard work and efforts of the support and development team.

Hello Daniel, thank you for contacting the developer.

I agree it is of low priority. Because you can close it by clicking on the appropriate area or pressing the Escape key. However, this "appropriate area" may actually be unexpectedly troublesome. Because in the case of a dialog with a check box directly below a drop-down list, the status of the check box may be changed unintentionally.

For example, the following video shows an example of a full-screen category of the preferences dialog. If you click on the bottom right corner of the list when closing the list, you may unintentionally change the check status of the option.

As indicated by the yellow and red markers in the figure below, users should be aware that PDF-XChange Editor has a fairly long clickable area for checkboxes.

Please give my best regards to developers.

rakunavi
