"No printer installed" error after update from 9.x to 10.1.3 (Win8.1)

Post by DIV »

After updating from 9.x (maybe 9.4) to 10.1.3 a few days ago I have had a couple of problems.
For one thing, the explorer.exe process crashed a few times immediately afterward.
Now I cannot print. The dialogue box displays a "No printer installed" message, but actually I have several physical & virtual printers installed. (This is in Windows 8.1.)

To my surprise, the same problem currently exists in 9.2 portable and 7.0 portable and 6.0 portable. (I don't physically print PDF files all that often, but in the several years represented by these versions I definitely would have printed a few things, at least.)

And even more surprising, likewise in Notepad, and Wordpad, and presumably everything else.

So I'm wondering whether the process of installing/updating version 10.1.3 of PDF-XChange Editor could have messed up the printer settings on my system.
Is this version known to be compatible/incompatible with Windows 8.1?

At this point, besides rebooting and hoping [not optimistic, because the above is coming from a clean shutdown and starting up fresh], I'm thinking I'll need to roll back to version 9.4 and undo whatever got corrupted.

Hello DIV,

We would not affect ALL your printers in general. An Editor installation will try to also install Lite unless you turned that option of at install time, however if anything - it should only be Lite that is affected by any issues with the installation process.
Please give it another try - try to uninstall the Editor and Lite, then do a new download and install.
Are you deploying using the .msi or .zip/,exe package?

If Notepad is also affected - then the issue is more than just with the Editor, and I do not believe it was caused by us, though I would ask our devs to check. I am not aware of any Windows 8.1 compatibility issues though I myself moved from 7 to 10 directly a few years ago.

Kind regards,
Stefan

To my surprise, rebooting has restored printing functionality.

Although in Event Viewer I did get a heap of errors like
"A timeout was reached (2000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Windows Search service to connect."
after rebooting. So still not great :-/

I'm not too sure — I clicked on the big, shiny "Update" button from within the application itself....

Incidentally, a bit off topic, but I've been caught a couple of times wondering why the update is taking so long, and it's turned out the dialogue box is sitting at "50%" progress having downloaded everything and waiting for a(nother) user confirmation to install what was just downloaded.

Hello DIV,

Yes - there is a 60 second delay after the download completes, and only after those 60 seconds end we would proceed with automatic installation.

Please try to uninstall, restart, and then install from these download packages:
https://www.pdf-xchange.com/product/downloads

And let us know if there are still printer issues!

Kind regards,
Stefan
