Vertical tab placement
Hello
We are 2024, in the age of large and wide monitors. Most browsers have implemented vertical tabs. Just wondering why PDF viewers are not implementing this convenience and productivity option.
I am an engineer and researcher dealing with technical drawings, specs etc. in need to keep many PDFs open, sometimes for long time periods for the duration of a project. It's not uncommon to have 30-40 PDF files open. Here is how my horizontal tab bar looks like.

I can barely see 5 characters of each tab or title.
Being able to place the tabs vertically on the left or right side of the screen would allow us to see the whole title, a long overdue feature.
Any thoughts would be welcome.

Re: Vertical tab placement
Hi, vjuhasz2
we have had that in mind for some time now, but I see it was never formalized with a ticket, so here it is now: RT#6875: Feature Request :: Editor :: Vertical Tabs for documents
This is a generic ticket, there is as yet no ETA, but it does mean that this is formally in the pipe now.
I hope that helps.

Hi all,
In the meantime, you can click on the sandwich icon at the left of the horizontal tabs.
This will show you the complete tab names in a vertical alphabetic list.
Kind regards.
Willy

Re: Vertical tab placement
Hi Will, thank you, I am aware of this function. I am looking for a permanent vertical placement of the tabs.
Would also be nice to have some GROUPING or STACKING function of some of these tabs, would be very useful for managing multiple tabs.

Hello vjuhasz2,
The ticket is already in place for the vertical tabs request, and as for stacking - we do not have that for the moment, however sessions might be a good way to group files if you need to keep track and/or work in different projects?
Kind regards,
Stefan

Re: Vertical tab placement
Hello,
I have seen several worthy updates For PDF-Xhange Editor during the past 2 years, however the vertical tab placement has not been implemented. I have requested it almost 2 years ago in April 2020 (viewtopic.php?t=38838) which has been marked as SOLVED - when it's not. Then I also requested here almost a year ago.
Come on devs. It's 2025 when wide screen laptops and wide screen external monitors are a reality. Almost every modern browser permits vertical tab placement on the side as a productivity and convenience feature.
I do research, I run a business - as a result I work with lots of PDFs and they need to be better organized. I have the editor set up to open the previous session automatically, so at any given time I can have 30 or more PDFs open in the editor. It's highly impractical to squeeze the title of all these tabs on one single line. Even on a wide desktop monitor the titles are cramped. On a laptop it's even worse!
Can you please implement the vertical tab display feature in the editor? Please... it would be really useful. Please.

Hello valentin juhasz,
Thanks for the follow up and for posting your concerns and feedback on the need of such a feature! I've included your comments in the ticket and then asked if we can raise it's priority, and would post any updates we have as soon as they are made!
Kind regards,
Stefan

Re: Vertical tab placement
Hi Stefan,
Thank you for this.
Some additional thoughts on this: there plenty of free PDF viewers (and even basic editors) on the market. There is no shortage of it. With your advanced features PDF-Xhange Editor also caters to professionals and power users who demand more than "just" a free basic viewer/editor. Hence, this is a paid product. Users are paying for additional power / productivity features.
Vertical tab placement, expandable/collapsible tab grouping (like in MS Edge) etc. is one of these power / productivity features. The ONLY reason I renewed my subscription in December was for this feature to land, which I am currently greatly missing.
With 20-30 PDFs open in the editor, with the current horizontal layout, the document titles become unreadable. It's far from ideal.
Hope this feature gets implemented SOONER rather than later. Thank you.

Re: Vertical tab placement
Hello all,
Imho, vertical tabs could be placed into a (un-)dockable vertical tab pane that also could include things like a 'find as you type' search filter box (as several other panes do already).
Best regards,
David

Re: Vertical tab placement
Hi David,
That's a great idea. The search box on of the tabs would be a great addition to allow users to just filter through / find quickly the required document by searching the titles (or possible content?) of the open files.

Re: Vertical tab placement
Hello,
After a few new releases, it is pretty disappointing that the native vertical tab placement has not been implemented yet - obviously this not being a priority to the devs.
I will keep using PDF-Xchange Editor, but will not renew my subscription until this feature is implemented, as the current horizontal only tab placement option makes it very difficult to deal with many open documents even on a larger screen. Most major browsers already support vertical tab placement to assist dealing with many tabs easier.
Otherwise keep up the good work.

Hello valentin juhasz,
I'm sorry you're disappointed, but this really isn't a priority for our developers at this time.
They have a lot of work to do.
The list of feature requests we have is quite long, as are the improvements they're making to the core of the product and existing tools and features.
We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Best regards.
