[suggestion] Add the ability to display destination areas directly in the document text

Post by Jensen Head »

This feature is present in browsers (when using appropriate add-ons that allow you to see anchors) and in Google Docs (when using bookmarks - the mark looks like a blue flag). This is very convenient in cases where there are several destinations on the page, their names are not identical to the headings, and it is necessary to assess at a glance whether all significant places are provided with destinations?

Ideally, I see the ability to change the position of destinations by dragging directly in the text of the document when the corresponding mode is turned on.

Hello, Jensen Head

A little preamble before I answer this request.. Note that "links" in this post, refers to any navigation action, not exclusively a link object, but bookmarks, destinations, or form fields may all contain "links" by this definition.
Much like in a number of other areas, Links in PDF, do not work like most other formats. PDF is coordinate based, and so your links do not have any direct tie to a text object of any sort, nor do they have any rules stating you cannot have 3 dozen of them overlapping the exact same coordinates.

In practice, a link is akin to a "map" that tells the software to go to page 5, zoom in to 200%, and then scroll so that the top left corner of the view is aligned with a specific x/y coordinate position on the page.

As such I can say with some confidence that I do not believe it would be possible to add a "text related anchor" for this purpose, but I have asked the dev team about the possibility of perhaps an "overlay" style view, where you can see link destinations as selectable objects. I am similarly unsure if that is possible, or if it would even be usable in such a context, but it sounds more applicable to the format links exist in for PDF.

Kind regards,

Hello, Jensen Head

Unfortunately, that one was rejected last I heard on it. The trouble with a "target overlay" turned out to be exactly the same as the holes I poked in the earlier request as well. As such, it seems neither of us gets our wish today.
