OCR Pages Error [System]: Unspecified Error.
I am trying to OCR a series of pages from a small magazine, it is mostly black and whiute but has some red highlighting and effects.
All efforts start, the OCR progress bar gets somewhat over 50% and then immediately fails as shown. If I run it against a multi-page document, it appears to work until the last page and then fails. I've tried creating a a copy, same failure. If I try a single page, same.
I have over 30GB of free space on my drive.
Running PDF-XChange Editor Plus 10.2.1 build 385 (Enhanced OCR)

Since I needed to resolve this ASAP, I re-installed and rebooted and the problem, at least for now has gone away.

In any case -I am happy to hear that now things are working for you!

Hello p2p,
Can you please try to update to the current latest build 387, and if you still have this issue - please share with us the document you are trying to OCR as well as the OCR window with all the settings in it - so that we can try to reproduce this here on our end.
Kind regards,
Stefan

Hello, Eymann
Have you restarted the PC since installing the update? If not please do so now and try agian.
If that still does not work, please uninstall the software, restart once more, then manually download and run a new copy of the latest installer directly from your account page. This should provide the missing files which cause this error.

Re: OCR Pages Error [System]: Unspecified Error.
OK, I'll try to reinstall the entire PDF-XChange software. And then report back, I suspect that a Win11 update has caused this error.
In any case, the restart did nothing.
Best regards
Update:
After the reinstallation it works again.
It's just strange that you have to reinstall it.
Maybe the repair function would have helped?

Re: OCR Pages Error [System]: Unspecified Error.
Hello, Eymann
Glad to hear it worked. In the past I have seen similar reports, generally caused by a permissions issue or other errors during installation, and while sometimes a repair could work, it is not as reliable as a reinstallation for this particular issue. As such, I stick to recommending a reinstallation when this comes up to get you the fastest solution.
Unfortunately this is something the dev team have investigated and it is invariably caused by an external app, folder permissions errors, or windows itself, and there is nothing much to be done from our end which can prevent it.

Re: OCR Pages Error [System]: Unspecified Error.
Hello,
With the latest version (10.5.2 build 395 – Enhanced OCR), I am experiencing the same issue mentioned in the previous message.
FineReader OCR appears to be running (I can hear the fan speeding up and my cpu at 100%), but in the end, it fails with the error "OCR PAGE: Unspecified error" for all images, PDFs, etc. The issue is not specific to any particular document.
I have tried uninstalling, rebooting, and reinstalling the software, but the problem persists. Notably, this issue does not occur when using the default OCR engine.
For now, I will continue using the default engine until a fix is provided.
Kind regards,
EDIT :
Problem solved this way :
-> Uninstall
-> Delete everything named ABBY in :
- C:\ProgramData
- C:\Program Files
- C:\Users\***\AppData
Registry in :
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE
-> Restart
-> Reinstall
-> Works fine !

Hello, melectronvolt
I am glad to hear the reinstall process helped. In most cases, a quick restart after the uninstall process is enough to remove any handles that may have caused such permissions issues, but manually deleting those folders can accomplish the same.

Re: OCR Pages Error [System]: Unspecified Error.
Hi, I am trying to figure out the re-install process in re:
I am having the same problem as the original poster in that trying to scan anything is giving me the unspecified error.
It seems that I cannot directly upload screenshots, so here's a readout of my current settings and configuration:
OCR engine options: Current OCR-Engine = Enhanced (Fine Reader)
PDF-Xchange Version: 10.8.1.406
Windows Information
Edition Windows 11 Pro
Version 24H2
Installed on 2024.11.14 Thu
OS build 26100.7462
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.275.0
Well I'm not sure if the above will help or not in my case...
... but I Am thinking the most logical thing to do at this point would be as one of the intermediate posters said would be to uninstall and then delete all the trace files and register keys and then reinstall.
Would I need to disenroll the license for this computer for this particular install before I run the uninstaller?
Or should that be taken care of when I run regedit to delete the associated keys for this app from the registry?

Re: OCR Pages Error [System]: Unspecified Error.
Hi, OC_there_you_R
all settings, including the license live in your HKCU under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tracker Software is you added the key post install via the Editor's GUI.
If you applied a key during installation is goes in HKLM, but few settings do.
It should be safe leaving a license key in there. Blow away HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tracker Software\PDFXEditor to remove all per user settings.
I am keen to hear if that resolves your issue.
