[build 388] When selecting objects with Edit Objects tool, selection highlight in Contents pane doesn't update properly

Post by rakunavi »

=== UPDATE ===================================================================
The issue reported below has been resolved in Ver 10.4.1 build 389.
I appreciate all the hard work and efforts of the support and development team.
==============================================================================

Hello all,

In build 388, the Bookmarks pane and Contents pane have been modified to highlight items across the full width of the pane when they are selected. With this change, I have noticed that selecting objects with the Edit Objects tool can sometimes display a display bug to the right of the highlight in the Contents pane, as shown in the figure below. I have attached a sample file just in case, but this problem occur with any file, regardless of the file or object type.

Case 1

  • The verification procedure is as follows. As usual, all settings are assumed to be initialized. Note that “Automatically Expand Content Items” in the Options menu of the Contents pane is disabled by default.

    1. Open the Contents pane.
    2. Activate the Edit Objects tool.
    3. Drag the mouse to select all the base contents.
    4. Double-click on Page 1 in the Contents pane or click on the leftmost > to open it.
    5. Deselect any object by Ctrl+Click. In the video, the second letter "e" in the top left "test" is deselected.
    6. Click outside the page frame to deselect all the objects.
    7. Select objects by dragging freely, and verify that the highlight corresponding to the selection is correctly displayed in the Contents pane.

The capture software used (ScreenToGif) displays a yellow circle around the mouse cursor when the left mouse button is clicked and a red circle when the right mouse button is clicked, so you can tell which mouse button was clicked just by looking at the screen.

In the video, the exact same operation is performed for build 387 and build 388 respectively, but in build 388, the highlight on the right side remains as garbage even after deselecting all the objects. As shown in the video, hovering the mouse over the Contents pane or scrolling the mouse will remove the highlight garbage.
Case 2

  • The following is a verification procedure when "Automatically Expand Content Items" is enabled in the Options menu of the Contents pane.

    1. Open the Contents pane.
    2. Enable "Automatically Expand Content Items" in the Options menu.
    3. Activate the Edit Objects tool.
    4. Drag a selection from the lower right corner of the page. Click and hold to change the selection and see how the highlight on the Contents pane changes.

This may have already been reported by someone else, or the developer himself may have noticed it, but FYI.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Hello rakunavi,

Many thanks for the detailed explanation and videos! As always those are greatly appreciated!
I've just created the ticket so that our devs can work on a fix:
#7117: Editor 388: Visual bug with selection highlights in the contents pane.
And we will update this topic as soon as there are any news in it.

Kind regards,
Stefan

Thank you, Stefan, for creating the ticket! Glad it was worth reporting.

There were a total of 32 updates in build 388 related to my earlier post (31 of which were issue related and 1 requested). It is my small pleasure to find updates that are not listed in the version history. My sincere thanks to the developers who worked on these issue and to the support people who endured and read my long posts.

I will continue to use PDF-XChange Editor every day to find the big fish. I wish I had a fish finder, but this is all luck. Ideally, from the standpoint of software stability, it would be better if we don't catch big fish, but as a hunter, I always expect to catch a big one.

Best regards,
rakunavi

Hello rakunavi,

I hope you do not find the "big fish" but we do really appreciate the thoroughness and dedication with which you prepare all your posts. While there are still a few small fish to catch - with your help we are working through them, and strive to make the Editor better!

Kind regards,
Stefan
