How do I turn my internet search feature into a text translator

Post by Alexo »

in the topic "https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowledgeba ... translator" when translating text the clipboard is limited to 1024 characters (1024 characters are sent by the program to Google translation). How to increase the number of characters to at least 5000? :?: Thank you.

Hello Alexo,

I am afraid that there is no way to currently control that, and if you have such long sections of text to translate - it might be better to be copy-pasting them. The KB article is intended to create a workaround when you need to quickly translate some shorter texts, but 5000 characters is well over a 'standard' page of text (Times New Roman, 12pt, 1 inch/2.5cm margins on a Letter/A4 sized page) which is about ~3000 symbols.

Kind regards,
Stefan

Yes, I translate large chunks of text, my job is related to this. I have a request, tell the programmers that they would try to remove this limitation if it does not violate the rules of code security, etc. This limitation (a variable somewhere in the code that is assigned a buffer size of 1024) and it would be great if in the next versions in the settings there was a parameter that regulates this buffer and users themselves could change from 1024 to 5000 characters. Such an improvement with an increase in the buffer would greatly facilitate the life of people like me and many others, everyone who works a lot with text translation.

By the way, if you open any pdf in the chrome browser, for example, and right-click to send the selected piece of text to Google Translate for translation, then chrome sends as many as you want, even 10,000 characters. But this is very inconvenient, the simplicity and convenience of working with pdf is lost, since in your program you can both voice the text at once and edit it at the same time and take notes. You can't do this in any web browser, they can only be used as viewers. Thank you for your work, I look forward to removing this restriction in your excellent pdf editor.

Hi, Alexo

thank you for your feedback and request. I have passed this on to the devs for consideration and will post here what they say.

Hi Alexo,

the devs agree this is reasonable. Rather than add a user defined limit they will set it to 5000 characters - same as Google Translate uses.

I have raised the associate ticket: RT#7122: Feature Request :: Editor :: increase text translation buffer to 5000 characters

It is internal, but if yo ask here for updates we can get you one. This should be done for the next release

enjoy
Best regards

That's great news! Paul, my respects! You guys are fantastic!

Continuing on the topic of translation usability. When I select a certain amount of text for translation, I can't see anywhere how many characters I've selected. Is the number of selected characters in the document displayed somewhere or is there no such function? It would be great and very convenient to see the number of selected characters at the bottom of the status bar or anywhere else.

Hello Alexo,

The number of selected characters is not displayed, but I will check with the dev team if this is something that can be done.

Kind regards,
Stefan

Hello Alexo,

I have added that second request to the ticket (#7122), and our devs will consider it at the same time when they are working on increasing the character limit.

Kind regards,
Stefan

@Stefan

Thanks for making this as an option cause I don't want to have the number of selected characters each time I make a text selection.

Hello Loki@99,

Yes - I made it clear in the ticket that this should be an option and not always on!

Stefan

Saw released build 10.4.2.390, the new buffer size of 5000 characters works great, but did not see changes regarding the number of selected characters and their displayed number, the developers have not yet implemented or is not planned at all? Realization of such functionality should not be difficult (of course, it all depends on the workload of developers). I will offer, if you do not mind, my vision of realization of this function in several variants:

1. We place a certain text field in the status bar at the bottom and when we select symbols in the document with the mouse, they are displayed in the text field. You can select as many characters as you want, the user controls the number of selected characters for translation, for example, but no more than 5000 (limit).

2. Since in the settings we have a set value of 5000 characters for translation, in the settings checkbox parameter “select no more than 5000 characters” (if the checkbox is unchecked, you can select as many characters as you want, if it is checked, only the limit of 5000). Now we select the text in the document, the program automatically does not allow you to select more than 5000 characters. By pressing the key we pull it down, but the program blocks the selection of more than 5000 characters.

Which option is easier for developers to choose them or well or refuse to implement this function at all. In any case, I look forward to hearing from the support team on the forum and the developers :)

Hello Alexo,

Glad to hear you like the 5000 character limit!

Both requests were included in the same ticket, and the ticket is still open - so maybe our devs are still considering the counter request.

Kind regards,
Stefan
