Japanese fonts and Word Conversion

Post by boshiume »

Hi everyone,

after reinstalling PDF-XChange (10.4.1., 389) and Microsoft 365 to see if my issues get solved with those measures, I had to find out they don't so I once again would like to ask for help.

Issue No. 1
Please refer to the attached graphic. They show a file with Japanese characters. The chosen font make it really hard to read and I would like to change the font to a more regular one. Where can I configure the font which are selected to display filename in the title bar and tab bar.

Issue No. 2
For some reason, Word (docx) doesn't convert my files to PDF anymore. When chosing "Convert to PDF" via Word's menu more or via "File -> Print ->PDF-XChange Office" or "File -> Print ->PDF-XChange Standard". It seems like I have two PDF-XChange printers installed: Standard and Office. I'm not sure if this has been always like that.

Also, using PDF-Tools the conversion of Word files works as well as on other MS applications like Excel or Powerpoint.

I'm somehow clueless, but both issues are really hindering in doing my job on a daily basis. I hope someone can help.

Thank you in advance.

Hello boshiume,

Open the Editor and then the Preferences Window (Ctrl + K).
In that on the left navigate to "Customize UI" and on the right you need to change the font I've marked with the red arrow:

Kind regards,

Hi Stefan,

that was so easy to find, seems like I was having Tomatoes on my eyes ... Many thanks for that. Do you probably have an idea concerning my issue with not being able to convert Word documents to PDF files?

Cheers,
boshiume

Hello boshiume,

Glad I could help with the fonts, and apologies for missing the second enquiry!
I am not 100% sure what you are doing in word, and how you were doing it before but File -> Print -> PDF-XChange Lite or Standard printer should generate a PDF file for you and allow you to then save it at a location of your choise.

Also - dragging and dropping files over the Editor should also convert .docx files to PDFs for you.

If you were converting them differently in the past - could it have been through this menu?

This is part of the PDF-XChange Standard printer (and the Pro bundle) and if you have lately only installed the Editor - you might not have that plug-in currently installed.

Please e-mail us (do NOT post it here) your order number or the first 10-15 characters of your license key to support@pdf-xchange.com and we would be happy to check whether that key allows you to install and use the plug-in.

Kind regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

I'm very happy for the your concrete and swift reply.

So without sending anything to the customer service I have just confirmed in my account that I have a licensed PDF-XChange PRO installed and I indeed used to convert my word documents through the menu you have posted.

I found out that I am able to convert via drag and drop as well, like you pointed out. Still the menu is not working for some reason. When I hit "Convert to PDF" the pdfSaver dialogue seems to pop up and shows some kind of progress, but it disappears too fast to make a screenshot. The behaviour used to be different: After finishing converting I was usually asked to decide where to save the converted file. When I search my whole HDD (I'm using "Everything" to do so) just to make sure that it hasn't been saved just somewhere, the file isn't found. So I guess the conversion doesn't work.

My apologies for this rather cryptic explanation. If there is any additional information that I can provide, please let me know where to look.

Cheers,
boshiume

Hello boshiume,

Can you please check whether the save as dialogue is not being shown behind another window?
Sometimes this can happen - so please check if you have a blinking entry in the taskbar with our printer blinking there for you.

You can also try to reinstall our full Pro package in case something is wrong with your current installation?

Kind regards,
Stefan

Hi, Boshiume

have you checked to confirm the options in the Printer are set to show the "Save As" dialogue?

Hi Stefan,
hi Paul,

the save as dialogue always appeared in the background so I was used to pay attention to my taskbar and never missed it. So that can be excluded.

Also, my printer options for "Save as" are identical to your screenshot, Paul.

Btw, I have two printers installed: PDF-XChange Standard and PDF-XChange Office. It doesn't matter which one I chose as my standard printer the document does not get converted - wether I try through Word's menu nor going through Word's File -> Print (when either printer setting is set to PDF-XChange Standard or PDF-XChange Office).

Hi, boshiume

do you get a temp file as described here? https://www.pdf-xchange.com/knowledgeba ... -I-do-this

If so we would like to see it.

:)

Hi Paul,

suprisingly few information is written in the .tmp file:
2024-09-30 22_27_19-Window.png
The .docx looks like this:
2024-09-30 22_30_02-Window.png
Does that somewhat help?

Kind regards

Hi, boshiume

is that temp file one generated by the process I linked to?

Is the issue limited to this one document conversion? If so may we have the docx here to test converting?

As a matter of interest, what does the document look like if you drag and drop it into the Editor rather than use the Word Add-In?
Best regards

Good morning, Paul,
is that temp file one generated by the process I linked to?
so it seems like I was missing some things happening in my %temp% folder.
When I hit "Convert to PDF", two folders are created named PDFXShellExt and PDFXStd. Each of them contain .tmp files. It does not create PDFXEdit which usually happens when you open the editor.
Is the issue limited to this one document conversion? If so may we have the docx here to test converting?
I would like to send you all files including the original docx file. What would be the corresponding e-mail address so that all files reach you?
As a matter of interest, what does the document look like if you drag and drop it into the Editor rather than use the Word Add-In?
Well, it seems like the Editor opens the file as a .docx file while creating a folder PDFXEdit in my %temp%. PDFXEdit contains quite a few folder starting with "pdfx-{" and some .tmp files. I can save this file as PDF without any issues.

Hello boshiume,

you can send the files to support@pdf-xchange.com with a link back to this topic and we would take a look at those for you.

Yes the Editor will open the .docx file if you drag and drop such files over it, but when you then try to save that file - you will save a PDF version of the same. Does the file look OK when you do such a drag and drop?

Kind regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

yes, the PDF file looks totally fine with drag&drop and saving it in PDF format.

I will send you the files to the mentioned e-mail-address.

Cheers

Hello boshiume,

Thanks for the files! We did receive them and I passed them on to Paul. He will follow up here when we've had a chance to look at those .tmp files.

Kind regards,
Stefan

My pleasure boshiume

In the excitement to understand the printing/conversion issue I neglected to respond to your first question:

Please refer to the attached graphic. They show a file with Japanese characters. The chosen font make it really hard to read and I would like to change the font to a more regular one. Where can I configure the font which are selected to display filename in the title bar and tab bar.
I have asked the devs about this as well.

So waiting now for both answers.

Hi again Boshiume,

the devs looked at the temp files and they do not offer an explanation. The devs are asking if we can do a remote session where you show us first hand the issue.

If that is something you are amenable to we can arrange the session over email and post the outcome here.
Best regards
