Paste Signature

Post by RHS »

Hi!

PDF-XChange Viewer is a great tool, especially the typewriter function. It makes filling out forms a snap. Being able to paste a digital copy of my signature would be a great addition. I know it has been suggested before, but shortcut keys would also be nice.

Thanks!

The answer given in this thread so why post another thread on this? It will be available in the Pro version.

Add your signature to a font and use that to type your signature. There is even a free — though basic — tool to do this in Windows. Press the Windows Key + R and run eudcedit Draw your sig and add it to the Private Use Area using the Private Character Editor

If you want to do a proper job, try FontCreator and add a logo plus any special characters that you need while you're at it.

It appears that PDF-XChange Viewer doesn't support Private Character fonts.

:( I hadn't thought of that. Actually, it does support characters in the PUA, but just not the way that Microsoft does with the Private Character Editor. It even managed to switch to a suitable font when I pasted characters not supported by my signature font.

The PUA characters work in WordPad or Word, but not in all applications. They don't work in OpenOffice either. So you need to use a font editor and assign your signature to a character that PDF-XChange will support, or produce your PDF from Word with the signature in it already.

The attachment shows the Typewriter tool in PDF-XChange with my custom signature font. The signature is assigned to ™ and the Tel Fax symobls are in the Letterlike Symbols character set in their proper place, but in another font. The font switches automatically, first to Lucida Sans Unicode because the Tel glyph does not exist in my Signature font, then it switches to Hattha, one of my own fonts because that contains the Fax glyph and the Private Use Area Small Capitals.

That is good programming. :)

Does Adobe supports it ? PDF format supports only vector fonts (yes, there is Type3 fonts, but they are only PDF specific and cannot be used outside PDF), but I'm afraid your "Private Character" is a bitmap font.

I didn't mean to imply that it did. I merely pointed out my oversight that it wouldn't work in PDF-XChange commenting tools, though regular PUA text does.

As you say, the characters are bitmaps. To get them into a PDF you have to use them in Word or Wordpad, before producing the PDF, as I have done with my attachment.

The quality of the bitmaps is not wonderful, but they may be good enough for some users. I recommend developing your own scalable Truetype fonts if you need high quality signatures or logos.
