I am considering purchasing PDF-XChange Editor but I have concerns about privacy, security and what data the software can access and transmit. I would appreciate your clarification on the following:
Your terms state that a single license is for one person and can be used on one desktop PC and one laptop.
How does your system verify that the license is used by the same person and not two different people?
How do you enforce the restriction to one desktop and one laptop, preventing activation on two desktops instead?
I have read reports of licenses being deactivated for users with Russian IP addresses despite the license being described as perpetual. Since I consider PDF-XChange Editor an offline software, how does it detect a user’s IP address? What other data does the software collect or transmit?
Thank you

Re: Concerned about privacy, security and what data the software can access and transmit
Hi,
thanks for your post and interest.
Whilst we cannot and will not disclose specific details of our security systems - I can tell you the following.
1: We do not sell our products in Russia and China any longer for several reasons - including just those concerns you mention - along with concerns over human rights and the fact we have friends and colleagues in Ukraine - we have an office in West Ukraine and have since very early on in our history, clearly we would not want to abandon them morally or politically in any way.
2: Users who purchased licenses in those territories legitimately prior to the above decision still have a perpetual license to our products for the version available to them at that time and can use them - what they cannot do is update maintenance, download updates or add additional users to their license. They also have no access to our web site or systems as these have been blocked.
3: When a new license is activated - each time a new installation occurs it must be activated by connecting to our web site and a check is done to establish if 2 or more activations have occurred (for a single user license for example) and assuming they have not - the new installation is approved.
Larger licenses are handled in a different manner and should you wish to have further information related to the specifics of this process - you will need to contact us by email and establish a direct and open conversation with us.
3: Validated users can deregister activations to allow the software to be installed again on alternate equipment via their account on our web site
More than this we cannot divulge without knowing to whom we are speaking and for what purpose, and this can only be initiated by email rather than hidden in the 'incognito' mode of a forum.
Thanks.

Hi,
You can only download updates (new releases) if you have valid maintenance (e.g. 12 months is supplied FOC when first purchasing and extensions to this can be purchased once expired, thus updating (extending) maintenance access.)
Hope that helps.

Thank you for your time. I have one last question: Are the new releases available for download for the free version (the one with the stickers on the corners) without having the maintenance updated?

Yes the latest release is always available - whereas in your account if licensed - you will have access to releases up to the date your maintenance expired available - so you always have available a perpetually licensed version to install, free of 'demo' watermarks.
